West Coast coach Adam Simpson has declared former Collingwood player Josh Smith has made a “good first impression” by winning the club’s first time trial of the 2018-19 summer this morning at the state athletics centre.

Smith, 24, taken by the Eagles in the AFL rookie draft after 32 games with the Magpies, pipped Andrew Gaff for bragging rights in the 2km trial, run in hot conditions before the squad returned to Subiaco Oval for a light training run.

Simpson was pleased with the way most of the squad had returned from their break. Andrew Gaff ran strongly, Brad Sheppard looked sharp and the other major absentee from the grand final team Nic Naitanui is ahead of where he was at this stage in his last recovery from a knee reconstruction.

“We had 10 or 11 with PBs in the time trial. We have got a few in rehab at the moment but we are reasonably happy,” Simpson said.

“It was important to get the guys back today and see how they are looking. Really pleased with the early results of time trials and skin folds and that sort of stuff.”
