Title: The All Time NBA Dynasty Draft
Post by: Jay on February 13, 2015, 04:58:05 PM
Been a while since we've done one of these, and I found a new concept that we haven't already done so why not.. Reply if you're interested.

RULES
-You get the player for the exact amount of time he played in real life. For example, if you draft Michael Jordan then you get a player who will be injured his second season who will retire after his 9th season, come back wth 17 games remaining 2 years later, retire again in 3 years, and then come back for 2 more years at age 38. The reason that I want to do it this way is because it will result is us ranking the actual real life value of each player's career. It also make the #1 pick much much more interesting.

-Assume that every older player will be just as effective today as they were in their day. We need to make things this way in order to avoid the debate of "how will older stars hold up in today's game" becoming the central theme of the entire draft. With that said, realise that does not mean that they get the same stats. For example, if the average starting Center avearged 15 rebounds in one era, and Player X averaged 15 rebounds, then you should assume he'd average the league average starting center rebounds in our league and NOT assume that he would put up exactly 15 per game.

-With current players, you need to estimate how the rest of their career will turn out. I think this will make things very interesting when trying to evaluate many younger players against older guys who are more certain commodities.

-The point of this draft is to learn a lot about past generations of NBA stars. Because of that, it is absolutely recommended that you do a good and informative writeup at the time of your pick, especially when taking any pre-1980 player.

-You will be required to draft an 8 man rotation.. A starting 5, followed by a reserve guard, wing and big man.

-Mat and Valk have agreed to judge once the draft is complete

-Draft will be in snake order. No limit on participants. I'll randomise a draft order once we have a good number.

Current Participants:
Jayman
Riotchess
AFEV
Cookie Monster
Levis
Holz

Obviously I won't go ahead if there's barely any interest but can't hurt to put some feelers out. If you guys would just prefer to do a simpler style draft, then I'd be open to modifying the rules but would be cool to do something a bit different..

Yep he was my #1 in this particular format. His longevity is a huge advantage over everyone else.

My first pick, and how can you not go with the goat, the best ever, come fly with me..

Michael Jordan

As many may know he was cut from his high school basketball team, and from then on, didn't miss a beat. Went to North Carolina college and was then first known for a game winning three in the national championship game.

The Chicago Bulls picked him up in the National Draft of 1984 with the 3rd pick. In his first season with the franchise played and started all 82 games with an average of 38.3 minutes and 28.2 points a game. Winning Rookie of the year.

Jordan played a total of 15 seasons, 2 of them he played only 17 games but the rest he was over 60. He averaged a 30.1 points a game over his career. 6 time NBA Champion, 6 time NBA Finals MVP, 5 time NBA MVP, 14 time NBA All-Star.

Although he didn't have the longevity of Kareem. He is still the greatest ever, and i think anyone would be silly not to pick him early.

Michael Jordan wasn't so much cut from his high school team as he didn't make varsity when he was 15 (who does) but instead was the centrepiece of his JV team.

Just saying. :P

Old Man Riverwalk, Tim Duncan.

The exact personality that you want to build a stable, enduring dynasty around. Duncan is consistent and reliable both on and off the court, and is the focal point of the greatest modern dynasty.
Top 20 all time for minutes played, Duncan is an incredibly combative and effective athlete. He may lack the flash and dynamism of some superstars of his day, but along with Kareem is in my opinion the bestp layer consistency wise.

60+ games in 15/17 (lockout) completed seasons so far, meaning that we can rely on Duncan to carry us from season to season.

Career Stats: Average (total)
19.7 PTS (25,598), 2.2 BPG (2,883), 3.1 AST (3,973), 11 REB (14,416)

Notable Seasons:
98/99 (2nd), 01/02 (4th), 02/03 (5th)

Awards & Accolades:
5x NBA Champion, 3x Finals MVP, 2x MVP, 15x AS, 10x NBA First Team, 8x Defensive First Team, RoTY

Also semi important question for the future, do we get players during their College/ABA years? Could be important for certain guys.

College doesn't count, you get them right from when they start their professional career (ABA/NBA). So with Duncan you get a 21 year old rookie, all the seasons he's played exactly and a projection on how the rest of his career will play out.

With ABA though, you'll have to determine how much a player's stats would change going from ABA to NBA in those years.

LeBron James
(https://brandonjsutton.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/trophies_wide-5a3eb0fdf4d5c93cb7d9a2d9e8d95e2d9957df15-s6-c30.jpg)

Career stats: 27.4 points @ 50% shooting, 7.1 rebounds, 6.9 assists, 1.7 steals, 0.8 blocks
Player Efficiency Rating: 27.7 (ranks #2 all-time)

Already one of the best all-round players ever, and is still operating at an MVP level. The season prior to LeBron being drafted to Cleveland, the Cavs only won 17 games. In his rookie year, they improved to 35 wins. In his final year with the Cavs, they won 61 games. The year after he left, they only won 19.

LeBron averaged 50 wins in his 7 seasons in Cleveland. Incredible considering the player that ranks 2nd in Win Shares for Cleveland during that 7 season stretch is Zydrunas freaking Ilgauskas who had per game numbers of 13.6 points, 7.8 rebounds.

Often criticized for his post-season performance, LeBron is 3rd all-time in playoff PER. And once he found a home in Miami with good team-mates, LeBron broke through to win 2 NBA championships, being named Finals MVP in both.

LeBron is also very durable, which is surprising given his athletic awesomeness. LeBron has played 41,642 minutes in his career which is more than anyone at 30 years of age. So I'm getting elite production from his 2nd year right until now with him playing heavy minutes and rarely missing a game.

im fine.

As many know I rate this guy as the most valuable player of all time. He is the only guy who can play all 5 postions and while Im only getting 13 seasons out of him I know I easily have the best point guard out there.

Magic Johnson

Defense wins championships and this guy sure knows how to win them. The best defender ever to go with the best point guard ever is a nice way to start things off.

Hakeem Olajuwon
(http://s3.amazonaws.com/br-cdn/temp_images/2013/11/14/HakeemShake.gif)

Career stats: 21.8 points @ 51% shooting, 11.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 3.1 blocks, 1.7 steals
Career PER: 23.59
Accolades: MVP, 2x Champion (Finals MVP in both), 2x Defensive Player of The Year, 2x Rebounding Leader, 3x Blocks Leader, 6x All NBA First Team, 5x All Defensive First Team

The Dream is one of the best low-post players in NBA history, possessing flawless footwork and a nice little mid-range game too. He is also elite defensively, being the all-time leader in block shots, 9th in steals, 4th in defensive win shares and also led the league in defensive rating 5 times.

Here is where Houston finished in the league defensively in Hakeem's prime (seasons 3-10):
3rd, 4th, 4th, 1st, 2nd, 10th, 5th, 2nd

Hakeem won back to back championships with a less than stellar supporting cast, also worth noting that this was in an era of elite big men. The tied 2nd leaders in win shares among those two Houston teams are Robert Horry and Kenny Smith - neither of whom ever made an all star team.

Hakeem was also very durable and ranks #7 in all-time minutes played amongst big men. In the 10th season of our fantasy league I think you can lock me in for the championship as this was the all-time best season for LeBron and Hakeem - they both won MVP and Finals MVP.

I love the pairing of LeBron and Hakeem, it assures me of an elite defensive team and Hakeem's versatility offensively doesn't hinder LeBron's game in any way as perhaps some of the other all-time centres would.

I sense the criticism already but I'll just do it,
Wilt Chamberlain.

This guy soaked up 40+ minutes a night for 13 seasons and only went under 70 games once.
As much as his era may invalidate some of his monster statistics, he is still on an entirely different level to anybody who played then or at any other time statistically.

He and GoAT are the only players to average 30+ over their careers, he had a season where he averaged 50, he had a season where he led the league in assists, won 2 championships and 4 MVPs and holds a record number of records (hell, there is an entire wikipedia page dedicated to a list of the records he owns).

Goliath on both ends of the floor.

Karl Malone

Karl had a 19 year career spanning from 1985 to 2004. He played in the era of greatest evers, Magic, MJ, Shaq etc.

Malone played a total of 1476 games, 42 of them with the Lakers the rest with his beloved Jazz.

He averaged 37 minutes in 19 years.

Although he never won an NBA Championship, he never missed playing in the post season. Without him the Jazz would not have been as successful as they were.

He is a two-time NBA MVP, 11 Consecutive All-NBA First team, he averaged 25 points and 10 rebounds per game in the 19 years and never averaged under 30 minutes per game in any season.

The Mailman, Utah's all time leading scorer.

Next Pick: Larry Bird
And: Oscar Robertson

Larry has the ability to space the court for Kareem. Larry's outside game is almost unstoppable and is a great clutch performer.
Oscar is just too good. Basically averaged a triple-double troughtout his career and he can give me everything passing, scoring and rebounding. My three picks so far will work excellently together and Kareem and Oscar played a few years together at the Bucks.

Kevin Durant

Kevin has been hailed as the only player who can possibly break Kareem's scoring record. So if he's future includes that then i'm pretty happy picking him in this format.

Kevin can do it all, play post, run the ball, cross over, defend and most of all shoot.

He has such a long reach that his arms can just reach over any oncoming defender and nail a three from way down town.

This season he has been run down with injury but has still be able to show us his form from his MVP season.

Kevin is already 5th in the All-Time average points table, and without major injuries in the next ten years he can really charge up into the 1 and 2 spot.

In his MVP year he averaged a total of 32 points per game, 5 assists and 7 rebounds.

He has one of the best Free throw percentages of all time, even went on a streak of about 100 made free throws in a row last season.

He is a player I can play almost anywhere, with his height and his ability to run and carry the ball, i think he is a very underrated player for this format.

Notable Career stats: 568 games played, 568 games started. 27.3 points a game, 5th all time average, only 0.1 away from 3rd, .881 free throw percentage

You the real MVP.

Kobe, Garnett and Shaq.. A few big personalities there, Riot ;) all shown they can play with other superstars though!

An incredible talent, Dirk has also proven longevity and durability, coming in at 17th for total minutes played. Dirk has been extremely consistent over his 17 seasons, his last season with a PER of under 20, was 1999-2000. Dallas has only missed the playoffs once during that span (and Dirk only played 53 games in that season).

I've wanted Dirk ever since I took LeBron - I think they would be a perfect fit.. Especially with Hakeem to cover up Dirk's weaknesses defensively. Offensively, Dirk is one of the best to ever do it. His shooting will open the floor up for LeBron and Hakeem who do their best work in the paint. Dirk at his best is still a low usage player for such a dominant scorer, which is what is needed to play with LeBron who is a force with the ball in his hands.

John Stockton
(http://media.giphy.com/media/GOIl4CelYNleM/giphy.gif)

Career stats: 13.1 points @ 52% shooting, 10.5 assists, 2.2 steals
Player Efficiency Rating: 21.8
Accolades: 9x Assist Leader, 2x Steals Leader, 2x All NBA First Team, 5x All Defensive Second Team, 10x All Star, 1st in career Assist percentage, 8th in steal percentage, 5th in win shares

In this format where you get a players exact career, longevity is a major factor. And that is why Stockton is such an ideal pick here. The guy is 3rd in games played and 7th in minutes played throughout his 19 season career.

Durability is not all he has got going for him though, prime Stockton is one of the greatest point guards to ever play. Take his 1989-1990 season, his averages were 17.2 points @ 51% shooting (42% from three), 14.5 assists and 2.7 steals.

He doesn't always need the ball in his hands to be effective, he's a gritty defender and solid shooter too. That combined with his passing ability makes him a perfect fit to the rest of my team.

Seeing as Jay stole my pick;
Jason Kidd. Gives me two good defensive guards and he can facilitate the offence, don't particularly need a volume scorer in this position. 2nd all time in assists and notoriously good defender.

Moses Malone

Some might say the better of the brothers, or at lease the brother that acclompished more.

Moses had a career spanning 19 years. His first two seasons were with the ABA.

He played a total of 1329 games with an average of 34 minutes a game.

He average a total of 20.6ppg at almost 50% from the field.

He is an NBA Champion, 3x NBA MVP, All-Time ABA Team, lead the rebounds 6 times, even a 5 year stretch.

Julius Erving and Steve Nash

Bird moves to power forward and Erving slots into the 3 spot. Nash is a fantastic shooter and perhaps the greatest distributer of all time. Julius won the ABA/NBA MVP 4 times and is a dynamic scorer from anywhere on the court. Some may not like the idea of Nash at 2 but I've always liked the idea of having 2 passers on the court in order to get the ball moving faster and both Nash and O can shoot the ball from distance so it's not that big of a deal.

Isiah Thomas

Surprise he's fallen so low, part of the "Bad Boys" Detroit Pistons era, 2x NBA Champion in the Era of Magic, Jordan, Bird, Hakeem and so on.

He played from 1981-1994, his 979 games played is the lowest in my team, but in those 979 games you knew he and the Pistons would be the toughest, more relentless team on that courts.

He averaged 36 minutes, 19 points, 9.3 assists. Goes underrated because of the Jordans and Magics of that era but is definitely one of the best PG's of all time.

Dwyane Wade
(http://www.nba.com/media/Wade_pg_060621.jpg)

Career stats: 24.2 points @ 49% shooting, 5.0 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 1.7 steals, 0.9 blocks
Player Efficiency Rating: 25.2 (8th all-time)
Accolades: 3x Champion, Finals MVP, Scoring Leader, 2x All NBA First Team, 3x All Defensive Second Team, 11x All Star

In Wade's rookie season the Heat went from being a 25 win team the year before, to winning a playoff series. Wade was 2nd in regular season PER on that team and #1 in the playoffs - incredible for a rookie. In his 2nd year he made the All NBA 2nd Team and the All Defensive Second Team. His peak year, 08-09, he led Miami to the playoffs with averages of 30.2 points @ 49% shooting, 5.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists with a PER of 30.4 (second in that year only to LeBron). The player with the 2nd most Win Shares on that Miami team who went to the playoffs was Udonis Haslem...

There's so much more to Wade's game than scoring though. His career assist% ranks 35th in NBA history - yes that's above Oscar Robertson and Michael Jordan. He is also the purest shot blocking guard to ever play. http://bkref.com/tiny/6781E

Elite on both ends of the floor, and we know he works well with LeBron - they won back to back championships together. This pick gives me a quality defensive backcourt with Wade and Stockton, and also another very efficient scoring threat. Playing with two of the greatest shooters ever in Stockton and Dirk should help Wade's game immensely.

Longevity: 40th in Games Played, 26th in Minutes Played

This pick allows me to somewhat cover the loss of when Hakeem is not on the court, particularly on the defensive end. Big Pat, anchored two of the top 10 defenses of all-time: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2185159-ranking-the-nbas-20-best-defenses-of-all-time/page/13

He is no liability on offense either, coming in at 6th all-time among big men for points. Ewing had a sweet shooting stroke which is ideal for a big man playing with LeBron.

I think Hakeem and Ewing could start together in certain matchups as both are versatile offensively and obviously elite defensively. Good luck scoring in the paint. And then having to guard a LeBron/Hakeem or Ewing pick N roll/pop on the other end.

Been throwing up a few different players to go for my bench and decided that Wilk was the best player to pick first.

24.8ppg, 6.7rpg, 35.5mpg and 1074 games over 17 years.

He's a 9x NBA All-Star, 1x NBA Scoring Champion, the Atlanta Hawks' all time leading scorer. And he wouldn't be a human highlight film without the 2x Slam Dunks Contest Champion.

He didn't win that many personal accolades, not as many as others have that's for sure. But with this team he can provide valuable minutes while KD has a rest. And valuable points too.

George Mikan and Pete Maravich

Mikan averaged 23.1 points and 13.4 rebounds a game over his career. He was the first real big star that ever played the game.
Maravich is the most underrated player to ever step on a court IMO. He changed the way basketball was played and was truely one of the most multi-dimensional scorers being able to shoot, slash and create off the dribble. When Maravich was inducted into the Hall of Fame he was stated as: "the greatest creative offensive talent in history." These two can play various positions and add lots of creativeness to my team.

Now my next pick, probably not the greatest pic to play with the likes of Michael Jordan. Especially being known for making this happen. ( I know it's not Clyde in the photo, but if anyone knows, there was this big fude between Jordan and Clyde at the time)

But, as cover to Jordan means they will play very little time together.

Clyde "The Glide" Drexler

He is an NBA Champion, a 10x All-Star, Portlands all time leading scorer and has his jersey retired by two teams (Portland and Houston)

He played, 1086 games going at 34.6 minutes a game. He scored 20.4ppg, gave 5.6apg, and grabbed 6.1rpg.

His 15 year career was consistent with how many games he played and how many points he scored.

PG: Isiah THOMAS
SG: Michael JORDAN
SF: Kevin DURANT
PF: Karl MALONE
C: Moses MALONE

Wing: Dominique WILKINS

I really believe, Jordan will play well in any team with whoever. He's that kind of player that when it comes to basketball can put whatever feud he has with anyone aside for a couple of hours.

Perhaps the greatest rebounder and wing defender to ever live. The dude was crazy but has shown he can play with other superstars over his career. He doesn't need the ball in his hands on offense and can defend any position. His rebounding is simply unmatched in the modern era - leading the league in rebounds for 7 straight years. In the 91/92 season he averaged 18.7 boards, was named All NBA Third Team and was on the All Defensive First Team.

He is the perfect role player to add to my squad, coming off the bench with extreme energy and hustle.

My final selection, Reggie Miller gives me an elite sniper coming off the bench. Helping spread the floor for the rest of my guys, his spacing will be vital. I avoided taking a PG here as LeBron will be my ball handler when Stockton is off the court. All Miller has to do is run off screens and nail 3 point jumpers, something he was elite at for 18 seasons. Now LeBron can get to his spots easier and my post up bigs have more room to go to work 8)

Firstly, I completely agree that Rodman was a fantastic D-Guy and rebounder.  What's even more amazing was he was a pure scorer coming out of college, but I digress.

What a lot of people don't remember from Chicago is that they actually played amazing team defence.  Watch the video again and tell me how many times Chicago DON'T go the double team on Shaq.  Shaq recognises this and passes back out from the low post a number of times (also smart play from Shaq)

Nate "The Great" Thurmond

Nate's career went from 1963 to 1977.

He was the first player ever to record a quadruple double.

His stats say it all, a beast defensively. averaging in his first 11 seasons over 10 defensive rebounds.

He averaged 15 points and 15 rebounds over his career. If it wasn't for his last couple of seasons it would have been 17 rebounds.

A very unknown player but one of the greats. His jersey retired by 2 teams in the Cavs and the Warriors.

He rounds up a pretty solid team.

PG: John Stockton (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/stockjo01.html)
SG: Dwyane Wade (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/wadedw01.html)
SF: LeBron James (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jamesle01.html)
PF: Dirk Nowitzki (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/n/nowitdi01.html)
C: Hakeem Olajuwon (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/o/olajuha01.html)

Wing: Dennis Rodman (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/rodmade01.html)
Big Man: Patrick Ewing (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/ewingpa01.html)

Offensive Strategy: With this team, I'd be looking at employing an "Early Offense" strategy. This offense is based on quick passes to reach the offensive operating areas before all of the defenders are set. By advancing the ball into the offensive side of the court within 2 to 3 seconds, the defenders are most often spread out, creating an opportunity for a high percentage of field goal attempts. Getting into offense before the defense can establish proper player match-ups also creates severe mismatches. With LeBron and Wade being such nightmares in transition, I feel this offense would get me several easy buckets every game. When the early push does not create a good shot or advantage, I'll be looking at employing a One-Three-One alignment. A diagram of this alignment can be seen below:
Now there are multiple 'motion' plays that can be run from this set, that I won't go into, but you get the basic idea. Hakeem is my low post threat, with Dirk operating at about the free throw line. Wade on one of the wings, and although he isn't a great 3pt shooter, the defender still has to follow him every where he goes as he is elite at cutting to the basket when he sees a weak spot in the defense. The other wing spot will be either Stockton spotting up for three, or LeBron looking to catch and drive to the basket. Stockton and LeBron will split time at the 1 and share the ball handling duties when both on the court, and be the dominant ball handler when either is off the court.

My bench guys are easy to plug into this system too. Having the threat of a Reggie Miller three will be a nightmare for defenses as he will always be paired with either an elite penetrator (Wade/LeBron) or a post threat (Hakeem/Dirk/Ewing). Rodman will be the low post guy when he comes in, as I want him to be as close to the basket as possible for rebounding purposes. I like the fit of Ewing playing the high post with his nice jump shot and big body to set screens for my ball handler. I could see an occasional paring of Hakeem and Ewing functioning well offensively too as both are so versatile.

Defensively: 6 of my 8 players made at least one All Defensive Team in their NBA careers, this wide range of defensive talent would set my team up well for stopping some of the elite offensive teams created in this draft. I put a particular emphasis on having elite Big Man defense as without this, there would be just no way my team could compete with the teams that drafted Kareem, Shaq and Wilt. Although impossible to completely stop those three guys, I feel as though Hakeem and Ewing could at least limit some of their dominance while making them work on the other end of the court.

Overall: The criteria that separates this draft from the ones we have done in the past is that you get the exact career of the player you select. For this reason, I focussed on guys who have really dominant "prime years" allowing me to win championships, but also "longevity" so I could compete for a long period of time. Wade is the only player on my roster who has missed a lot of time due to injury throughout his career, and although LeBron hasn't played the huge number of seasons that some of the other guys have, he's been incredibly durable throughout his career so its fair to project that he'll end up with similar games/minutes played numbers as possibly the Kareem and Parish's of the world. Stockton, Dirk, Hakeem, Miller and Ewing are all top 40 all-time in both the minutes played, and games played categories.

This team is going to be elite over a long period of time, and once we get to the prime years of LeBron and Hakeem, watch out 8)

SF: Kevin Durant (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/duranke01.html)
PF: Karl Malone (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/malonka01.html)
C: Moses Malone (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/malonmo01.html)
Guard: Clyde Drexler (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/drexlcl01.html)
Wing: Dominique Wilkins (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/wilkido01.html)
Big Man: Nate Thurmond (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/t/thurmna01.html)

Offensive Strategy:
I feel, along with a lot of the other teams, that i can pretty much trust anyone in my team to run the ball and i don't have to rely on one certain gameplan or play for my team to succeed. I have Isiah who's assisting ability can when on the attack give us 5 scoring options. Some players over time have been guarded less because of their inability to score. I think the greatest asset to my offence is that it's great both inside and outside and players can all play different roles in the offence. With Jordan and KD the fastbreak will definitely be a strong part of my game. But if the opposition defense can get back in time i feel any of my players can make slower plays.

Wilkins, Drexler and Thurmond are all great offensive and defensive players so i can rely on them to do their role when on the offense. Crashing the boards, spreading the floor, hitting the outside shot and running to the rim. I feel all of my players give a great offensive output that a lot of teams may struggle to hold up.

Defensively:
I have 3 great big men who average 10+ defensive boards over their career. And 5 others who are great one on one defenders. KD can guard from the likes of Alan Iverson to LeBron James (Was gonna say Kareem, but no one can guard Kareem). Jordan is great getting back to stop the fast break and picking off passes as is Isiah. Karl, Moses and Nate are beasts in the defensive paint and can pull down any rebound in their radius.
I feel i don't have any liability's on defense i think every one of my players are great defenders in the paint and on the outside.

Overall:
Overall i have no problem on my team, i'm not going to say it's perfect and would win a championship every single season. But the longevity of Malone and Jordan. There is only 2 players who played less than 1000 games in their career's. One of them is still currently playing.
I think my team would be hard to beat in this format, some may say that players like Isiah and Jordan can't play together because they hate each other. I think if put in the same team, they would work out a way to play if it meant winning.
All of my players have been extremely durable, only a couple missed parts of a season due to injury.

I think the best part about the team, is having 5 guys i can trust to make that game winning shot.

Triangle Offense
The triangle offense was coached by Phil Jackson and has bagged him 11 titles, its also the system that MJ, Scottie, Shaq and Kobe won their rings in.
The system's most important feature is the sideline triangle created by the center, who stands at the low post, the forward at the wing, and the guard at the corner. The team's other guard stands at the top of the key and the weak-side forward is on the weak-side high post — together forming the "two-man game." The goal of the offense is to fill those five spots, which creates good spacing between players and allows each one to pass to four teammates. Every pass and cut has a purpose and everything is dictated by the defense.
After drafting Shaq i surrounded him with the pieces that brought him success and those that had played the same game.

Duo   Years   Games   PPG   RPG   APG
MJ w/ Pippen   87-98   1509   48.9   12.2   10.8
Shaq w/ Kobe   96-04   1075   48.6   16.6   7.4

Kobe Bryant and Scottie Pippen, 11 rings in the triangle, Paul Pierce (4th all time in 3's), Ray Allen (1st all time in 3's) and Kevin Garnett played together and in a similar styled offense and have the chemistry necessary to keep the same offensive flow throughout.
My two wild cards are Steph Curry (future 3pt king) and Anthony Davis, Steph was an important pick for the team as he doesnt need the ball in hand to do damage, in 4 and a half seasons he is 66th all time in triples, ahead of Allen Iverson, Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant, he is going to get open looks and he will bury most of them.
Anthony Davis does not have a weakness in his game, he is a more efficient and dare i say a better version of a young Shaq, i really dont need to harp on about him if youve been watching NBA in the last 2-3 years.

Defense
The hallmark of a Phil Jackson defense is a help defense, guys that can fly around create chaos and block shots from anywhere, the best defensive player he ever coached is at his disposal again in Scottie Pippen, even if there were liabilities elsewhere Pippen would have to be the greatest 'help' defender of all time, a quick peak at his defensive highlight reel reveals some of the most exciting defensive plays in NBA history.
Shaq, Garnett and Davis are elite paint defenders, Paul Pierce is a solid wing defender and Steph Curry is a thief, the defense is good but the plan is we are just going to score more points than anyone else through efficiency in a system that has proven to be the greatest Offense in the history of the game.

Judge's Comments:
A lot of really great players, a few from different eras and a couple that it would be impossible to find footage of them playing in this day and age. The reason I gave the fit a 7 apart from a couple of guys I have no knowledge of, I think Nash has to play the point, I am not a fan of playing guys out of position and he has to be a primary ball handler. Same goes with Bird, while he can play the 3 and 4 I think you need to play him at the 3 even with today's NBA playing a bit of small ball.

Jayman's Comments:
Really interesting team this one, and is going to be a contender for this entire competition simply due to Kareem - in my opinion he's the #1 player in this format. With Nash, Bird and Kareem, this is going to be an elite offensive team with threats inside and out. I'm not sure if a backcourt of Oscar and Nash would play to each other's strengths though. If you're going with Nash you probably need a lockdown defender with him. I think Nash would effectively end up just being a spot up shooter on this team which is a slight waste of his ability, not saying he wouldn't be good in that role though. Well done, Levis :)

Riotchess' Comments:
Love the Oscar and Kareem pairing, even like the Bird pick but i think he would have been better suited at small forward in this format, guarding the likes of Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Dirk Nowitzki he is giving up a lot of length with his lack of vertical leap.
I reckon your team would have been better balanced had u drafted a specialist shooting guard, Oscar, Nash and Pistol Pete are all great PG's, the problem i see is Nash carries the whole responsibility of the 3 point shooting in your back court as the other two played primarily before the 3 point line was brought into the NBA.

Judge's Comments:
The weakest player was the last pick in Thurmond but the rest are or will be all time greats including the best player ever. The reason I have a 7 for fit is apart from the fact that Jordan and Thomas hate each other but I probably would have only taken one of Dominique and the Glide. I think you needed another PG as Jordan and Durant would play big minutes. Clyde and Wilkins can both swing in that 2/3 spot to cover who comes off hence only needing 1.

Jayman's Comments: Unstoppable offensive team, probably the best of the lot. They all need the ball in their hands to be effective however so it would be interesting to see if, for example, Moses Malone could survive not even being a top 3 option on offence. I feel the big man defense would struggle though against team's like AFEV with Duncan and Wilt, as their is no real shot blocking. Perimeter defense is fine though, with IT and MJ. I'm not buying into the chemistry issues between IT and MJ, I think if they started together, they'd work it out and would actually suit each other. With the bench, I worry that Drexler and Wilkins are too similar, they both have the same strength - carrying an offense. Overall, this would be an insanely fun team to watch. Well done, Cookie :)

Riotchess' Comments: MJ and KD35 would work really, KD's game already has room for Westbrook, offensive chemistry could be an issue with so many high usage players, the other weakness i see is the two Malone's defensively, great players but are not 'shot blockers' Karl 0.8 and Moses 1.3 per game, both will be under sized playing other teams at 6'9 and 6'10 the elite offensive Centres are going to score to easily (examples, Jaymans bigs both 7'0 and legit shot blockers, against AFEV Wilt Chamberlain 7'1  :o :o :o ) That said with MJ and KD combining anything could happen.

My fav team on paper, especially because there are a lot of guys that have prior chemistry and would mesh together. After reading Kobe's interview on Shaq and the fact they won rings together, throw in all the amazing players around them and the guys coming off the bench that can stretch the floor, this team looks unbeatable, even if they came up against the other greats.

Jayman's Comments: My favourite team. I'm struggling to find a weakness for it, I looked at possibly Curry and Allen's perimeter D but any defense with Pippen and KG is going to be elite no matter who you surround them with. The only thing I can think of is that KG and Shaq's offense drops off fairly quickly, so once they are out of their primes perhaps this team could struggle with a low post presensce - but I'm clutching at straws. This team looks unstoppable, and has 4 of probably the top 10 shooters ever with Steph, Ray, Pierce and Kobe. A KG and Shaq pairing is a complimentary pairing too, KG is so versatile offensively that Shaq can do whatever he wants down in the paint. Love it, Riotchess :)

Judge's Comments:
While Mutombo and AI are great players I think they are the weak links in terms of talent (a couple of guys I view as better availaible). The reason I gave the fit a 7 is mainly because of AI. A brilliant player, but never a team guy and in a format like this I think he causes issues.

Jayman's Comments:
The best team after two picks, Duncan and Wilt would be an absolute force together. Kidd and West is also a very good backcourt, Kidd for his defense and general triple double'ness and West with his silky smooth outside shot. I'm not sold on the Iverson/Wilt combination and I think there were better wing options than Barry and Worthy. I don't mind Mutombo coming off the bench, altering shots and doing Mutombo things. I would have gone with Parish in this spot though who plays a similar role just did it for much much longer. The player that saves this team is the never-ageing Tim Duncan, such an easy player to build around and will always keep this team competitive.

Riotchess' Comments:
I dont see any real weaknesses in this team, the balance is outstanding, doesnt even really require an explanation in strategy as u read the starting 5 u can visualize the classic style of basketball they would play.
Wilt Chamberlain and Tim Duncan working together :o bloody scary, could they be contained? the rest of the team fits so well together that i think the AI pick coming off the bench is a masterstroke, the instant offense makes the team more dynamic.
Team Jaymans Wade and LeBron Vs AFEV's West and Barry was the defining reason why the i ranked it in this order.

Judge's Comments:
Probably the team I view as the most talented on paper, however and I am going to be harsh here, Stockton in my opinion doesn't fit this line up. I know Jay was going for longevity, but CP3 went undrafted and he would be a far better fit in this lineup as he is a better defender then Stockton and a better pure scorer. While Stockton was a good defender, he was nowhere near the defender that CP3 is at the position . That is my main problem with this team but I think it is enough to bump it down a couple
of points otherwise this would be my clear winner.

Riotchess' Comments:
The system and the players fit perfectly as articulated, this team spreads the floor the best, has the right type of complimentary pieces, Stockton a pass first PG that shoots 38% on triples, Rodman wouldnt care if he didnt take a shot, Reggie who does all his work curling off screens without the ball, the two Centres are elite passers and jump shooters 15-18ft for the position as well as legitimate defensive forces. Wade and LeBron are a proven duo that had ridiculous success in only 4 seasons, i wonder how many rings they would be wearing now had the been playing their whole careers together?

Judge's Comments:
I really like this team as well, I just think that Riotchess's team would win a best of 7 series so I had to rank it slightly lower

Jayman's Comments:
David Robinson off the bench is flowering awesome, that's my instant reaction to this team. A really good balance of offense (Magic, Erving, Barkley) and defense (Havlicek, Russell, D-Rob). One problem is that considering we get exact careers, this team will have Magic retire early and I'm not sure it would be able to win without a prime Magic Johnson. In those Prime Magic years though, it would easily be one of the best teams in the comp. I like the pick of Cousy off the bench, as he has a similar style to your starting PG (pass -first). Barkey and Russell is a really good pairing, covering up the other's deficiencies. This team probably lacks one more elite outside shooter, if you replace one of Erving or Gervin with an elite 3pt shooter it would greatly improve the team.

Riotchess' Comments:
Another classic styled basketball team that has no obvious weakness, its well balanced and again u can visualize the way they would move the ball without an explanation.
I would love to see Team Holz Vs Team AFEV in a 7 game series, seriously cant really split them even when isolating each individual matchup. Russell Vs Chamberlain, Barkley Vs Duncan, Kidd Vs Magic, Worthy Vs Gervin 8)

Having read through this again, def not enough love for jaymans. You can put literally anyone who is decent enough to start @ PG/SG on a ring team and the team should finish top 3. Dirk/Hakeem/James is literally absurd. No weakness at all. You have the GOAT 2 way players and the greatest scoring big man ever.

yeah sounds like a good idea, so draft current players in October and the winner is based off that seasons stats etc?

I wouldnt say stats, still go with votes but you have an indication on how the players performed. For example guys like melo should have much less value this year than he did this time in october. Or curry might have gone pick 5-6 but really now worth 2-3.

its more the later picks that become more important. Like Jimmy butler would have been a late pick up but really his value was an allstar. or now tristan thompson cant just be picked up last round by me as kids a gun.
