Simpkin would fit nicely I reckon.

They are missing Coglan from Essendons VFL team, who I reckon would get a fair look at.

M Jamar would surely have to be the ruck option.

Both the Geelong guys weren't ready to retire in Stokes and Kelly.

And Matthew Watson, Ive always like him. Not sure why he was delisted from Carlton.

They are also missing Zac O'Brien who was recruited from Essendon VFL club originally. Would also add hardness to the midfield.

To take a step back a little, what is it you need to achieve from your top up players? In looking at a few of the new best 22 sides, the 2 things that jump out are the massive hit in the engine room, and a lack of experience more than a lack of talent. So I think you need to pick up a few players to add some on-field experience to direct the young guys, but then a bunch of your top up players could actually just be players to add some depth in case of injury. You are not going to replace the likes of Heppel, Watson, Stanton, Myers with top up guys. So instead for me the wise thing would be to focus on player development for 2017 onwards. Add a few guys who can impart some game sense advice on field, and then get as much time into the youngsters as you can. The upside (if you can see it that way) is that pressure is off for the season, you're in a great position to school up the young guys without the pressure to get results.

I agree, I too would be getting games into the young guys. Worsfold and Essendon want to start fresh and it is the best way to do so.

Jamar was seen at training in Essendon gear. He will be a good pickup in my eyes.

Bit of a cop out that other clubs affected must only upgrade a rookie player. Where Essendon don't even need to use any of their rookies included in the 10.

Essendon had 12 guys suspended though. 10 top up players + 2 rookie upgrades.

M Watson can only play 'well' in the last few rounds of the year. Spud.
Bootsma might have to add some photos on to his résumé to get him across the line.
Simpkin is a lock, and one of Kelly and Cross are likely.
Title: Re: Top Up Players
Post by: Barra13 on January 15, 2016, 07:03:49 PM
I'd be very surprised if Cross was to sign up. He is definitely still very conditioned as he has been doing all of the running that the Melbourne players have been doing. He is currently a development and rehab coach and will be the on-field runner for the Demons. It would be a big loss if he did go.

I find a lot of the recruiting strange.

Keep hearing people say they need older guys to help the kids but I think they are going a bit overboard.
I would have only recruited guys that could potentially have a future at the club Beyond this year.
Yes they would  will finish bottom and get a harsh lesson most weeks but at least they all get lots of games into them. They will develop ahead of their age and be joined by high draft picks at the end of the year for finishing last.
Think it would be far more beneficial to the team for 2016 and beyond which should be the focus, not just trying to be competitive this year

The only problem with that man is that by being smashed every week you will do more damage to your kids than good. The older and bigger bodies will help protect their kids and allow them to develop a little more naturally

There's a lot of guys in their early to mid 20s in the state leagues that would thrive from the opportunity that could also provide that protection. Recruiting a bunch of guys on the wrong side of 30 has no benefit beyond this year

That's the point of the top-ups? It doesn't go beyond this year and it's to keep Essendon somewhat competitive against some of the lower teams... Having 22 players under the age of 23 would be useless.

There's nothing to say all of the banned players will come back.
Wouldn't you rather see potential future players having a crack rather than old guys that will be gone next year?

I'd rather Essendon have the strongest team possible. Nothing enjoyable about watching a team get slaughtered 22 games because they chose to play nothing but kids...

I don't know exactly how it works, but I doubt that if any of the banned players walk away from the game then I wouldn't have thought Essendon could just make a top-up player permanent. I would think that the top-up players would essentially be DFA's and would be fair game?

So field a competitive side, finish higher and not get the #1 draft pick? What's the point? They aren't playing finals either way so why not concentrate on the future?

Essendon's main focus will be their current list. If the potential <25yr old topups were good enough they probably would have gone after them last year in the draft.

They'll focus on developing their own boys and will do everything they can to look after them and continue their development

There's been plenty of young guys that have been delisted in the past and then thrived when given a chance at a new club though.
All these 30+ year olds have nothing to prove. They will help in the short term but won't care or be there beyond this year.

Crowley, Jamar, Kelly, Stokes are a waste of time IMO.
If I was a bombers supporter I would prefer the guys like Dea, Simpkin and Polkinghorne who have something to prove.

I am in 2 minds do not mind a couple over 30 but there are plenty of 24 - 30 year olds running round in the various sub competitions that would give their right arm for an opportunity to be noticed again.  For the life of me can not see why Zac O'Brien has not been picked up. Only 25 years old and won the Reserves best and fairest and came from the Dons VFL so in my opinion a hard nosed mid fielder ready made.

With the top ups Essendon don't have first rights, I believe they'll just nominate for the draft, and even then I would have thought we will only pick up 2 or 3. Polkinghorne, Dea, Simpkin probably the three most likely at the moment.

Out of the 12 Essendon players banned, I can see 4-5 not to play again.

Bellchambers, Colyer, Heppell, Hurley, Hibberd, Hooker, Myers and maybe Watson I can see coming back to play, how many of them  at Essendon who knows?

But Hocking, Stanton, Pears, Howlett i believe have all played their last game for the club.

So, ASSUMING, Hurley and Hooker return, and players like Mitch Brown and Hartley have good seasons, IF Matt Dea has a good year I would think he would go somewhere else to play.

So Essendon i think will keep 2 of the top ups given. Maybe 3.

Bombers already have more than enough younger players on their list. The top ups don't have to play every game but they are needed. Throwing Parish into the mids next to Crowley who'll protect him makes sense. Throwing him in with a VFL quality player won't help much.

Fantasia, Gleeson, Langford, Laverde, Francis, Parish, McKenna, Merrett and even Daniher is almost too much youth already so getting some experience around them makes perfect sense. You can't expect to be competitive while playing with 2 players who have played more than 45 games in the side.

Im a little bit worried Essendon will be too good. I mean I want them to not be smashed week in week out, as that detrimental to our kids development, but finishing 9th or 10th is showerty for draft picks. which in my opinion is the most important thing besides kids development this year.

How would you finish 9th/10th

You finished 15th last year and that was with a full squad

The most important thing is we play Carlton twice and we'll beat them and if that happens that a successful season for me!

To be honest KB I think Bombers will not finish last.  The youth that you have will want to really impress and make it hard for the established players coming back so may play above themselves.  Whether they can keep going for the year remains to be seen.  Would have preferred the Top up players to be in the 26 - 30 age group personally as these players will really be champing at the bit to show they should be picked up as mature aged people.  Zac O'Brien for one really hardened and would have been a real pick up.

who could be lower?

Carlton?

I think brissie will be better than essendon this year- can't really see anyone else doing worse other than the blues.

We have seen it before with teams under pressure coming out and surprising.  I am expecting something Similar from the Bombers and they may win a few early games to get going before the real grind sets in later. And a brave prediction after 7 rounds I expect the Bombers to be above Lions due to our horror draw.

It's sounding like Nathan Grima and Sam Michael will be the final two top up players for the Bombers.

Really happy if Grima signs, if he can keep fit. Even though it won't change much about how the season goes, it gives us a good solid key defender.

Not too sure why they are chasing Grima, he wont last more than 5 games

Essendon unlikely to get to 10 top ups. Not particularly interested in any other players and would love to save the $. Might just stop at 8.
interesting. Wondering if they are considering this so that Port stop whining about having less players than Dons?

He may have made it clear he didn't want to play again after we delisted him. He was stiff to get cut after some impressive form in the back half of the season.
