Title: French Open 2016
Post by: Torpedo10 on May 22, 2016, 05:15:49 PM
This is one of my favourite times of year, and not just because of the Footy.  ;)

Tips? Predictions? Big Calls?  :o

Djokovic wins it. Big call seeing as he's never won one before :P

There are only 6 possible players that can win the mens draw and 3 of them are only outside chances

In order the 6 that I favor are Djokovic, Murray, Nadal then a big gap to Wawrinka, Nishikori and the roughy is Kyrgios.

Nick has the ability to beat any of the guns on his best form. He beat Wawrinka in Madrid and a point here and there he could have beaten Nishikori in the Quarter Finals in the Madrid Masters and pushed Nadal to the limit in the third round in the Rome Masters.

Djokovic and Murray in the last 2 masters events played the finals and split them 1-1. Djokovic in 3 sets in Madrid and Murray in straight sets in Rome.

Nishikori pushed Djokovic to 2 tight matches in those 2 events in the Semi Finals. The match in the Semi Final in Rome which went to a 3rd set tiebreak was a brilliant match, albeit won by Nole

Nadal has been in solid and looks in decent form but had lost to both Murray and Djokovic in the lead ups. He is drawn to face Nole in the semi finals and Nole on form will beat him.

Wawrinka's form has been patchy in the Masters events but will be confident after winning the title in the ATP World Tour 250 event in Geneva this week. His 2nd week of the French Open last year when he smashed Federer, Tsonga and then bullied Djokovic in the final was the best tennis he will ever play IMO. He needs to replicate it to be a chance to defend his title.

I am predicting a Djokovic v Murray final with Djokovic winning.

In the Womens singles you always have to favour Serena Williams but I would like to see Garbine Murgurza win the title.

No chase the ace! :(

In other news, Kygrios is still a dickhead. He's a gun at winning tiebreakers though.

I don't think yelling at the ball ball "TOWELL!!" warranted a violation.  He was still at mid court, so maybe there is a case for they might not hear him (pulling at straws here).

Also, as soon as Nick does anything its gets blown out of proportion.  I still don't think its worth a code violation.

An absolute epic first round game has just finished. Sucks that the fame had to be first round due to Dimitrov coming back but wow what a game by Troicki.

It goes both ways I reckon. He gets no benefit of the doubt because he's Nick Kygrios but its also his fault for acting like Nick Kygrios.

So Murray is in trouble in his 2nd round match against Mathias Bourgue.

Bourgue is from France and ranked 164th in the world but that is a false ranking based on the match.

His forehand is a right handed version of Rafa. Gets plenty of spin and depth on the ball and is controlling the points. If he can keep his composure Murray may find himself back on an early flight to the UK.

I dunno why, but for some reason I've always hated Murray. He seems to have an unlikeable face.

I wouldn't mind him losing. He however just got a break up in the 4th set and should win the set. Murray then would be $1.01 to win the 5th set.

Murray has come from behind in his first 2 matches to win in 5 sets against Stepanek and Bourgue.

At least there won't be a lot of running in his next match when he plays Ivo Karlovic. Then he could play another big server John Isner in the 4th round.

Rafa Nadal is OUT of the tournament due to a wrist injury. According to Nadal at his press conference if he keeps playing he would have snapped a tendon in his wrist if he kept playing.

Had played his first 2 games with heavy amount of anesthetic injected in the wrist.

Geez, at the start of the French I picked Andy as my Winner.

After two "five setters", I thought that was going to be an awful pick.  :P

He still has an unbelievably hard road to the Final, Isner, Kei, but Rafa has certainly surprised many. There were virtually no rumors about any injuries in his wrist before RG.

Nadal was arguably the most impressive of the top players in the first 2 rounds.

Murray back to some form with a straight sets win over Karlovic and shouldn't have too many problems against Isner.

Kei struggled against Verdasco but as we know Verdasco's best tennis is pretty good so the fact Kei won is only a positive for me.

Stan played very well in his last 2 games and for me is firming as the pick of the bottom half of the draw to make the final.

Raonic also is in the bottom half of the draw and hasn't dropped a set. Plays against Ramos-Vilonas next and should be winning that one comfortably.

Novak a moral IMO to make the final. No one IMO in the top half of the draw can beat Novak unless he plays well below his best.

Good to see Sam Stosur into the 4th round with a win over last year's runner up Lucie Safarova. She has a tougher match against the 2014 runner-up Simona Halep in the 4th round.

No doubt here that we have the two future "Slam Champs" in Zverev and Thiem right now.

Zverev took the first 7-6, but I've been watching for the half 40 minutes and am yet to see a point without entertainment.

He had 3 wins against rubbish players and is now losing to another rubbish player. I do not agree that he has been impressive before today.

What happen to Tsonga?

Injured his adductor, took an injury time out at 5-2 up in the first set but couldn't continue. Commentators seemed to think it might have been something he brought into the tournament.

Honestly Gulbis looked awfully inconsistent. Tsonga just had to keep hitting it back in play!

Those tight ass French Open organisers and the French Government need to invest in a roof on their major courts.

Rain predicted all week means the schedule is in chaos and we could be playing beyond Sunday.

Djokovic has lost the first set against Bautista Agut.

Sam Stosur in a great position to beat Halep and move into the Quarter Finals being up a set and a break.

The tennis is now stopped for now due to a rain delay.

If Djokovic was to lose before meeting Ferrer (I haven't looked at the draw so don't know when that is), does anyone think Ferrer is a chance to win the whole thing? He could upset Andy Murray if needed I reckon :o Berdych is first for him though, he should win he has a good record over Tomas

Been watching a lot of Ferrer recently even in lead up tournament (not sure why). Has looked off his game regularly and I was kinda waiting for him just to lose in an "upset" in the French open. However, this hasn't happen, so yes I think he could be a chance with the big guns not being up to their game either

IMO he will beat Berdych but he is not playing well enough to win the French Open.

FWIW I am tipping Gasquet to make the final. His form clearly the best IMO of the bottom half of the draw. He was very impressive in beating Kyrgios and Nishikori. Murray is going ok but not great and Wawrinka has not been at his best either.

I still reckon Djokovic will be very had to beat.

Agreed, its borderline farcical. The Slam might not finish for another couple of weeks which throws out the whole calendar with Wimbledon now that fair away.

As for Stosur, amazing tennis. If only she played like this 60% of the time instead of 5% of the time she would be entrenched top 10. Really hope she can win this, think she's a big chance but not convinced she will.

As for Ferrer, I actually think Berdych will beat him. He's not looking 100% imo, possibly on the decline or possibly just in a rough form patch. I think Berdych will win tonight (pending rain) in 5.

There's at least 20% chance of rain during the day in Paris today, tomorrow and Friday. Clears up after that.

Even one stadium with a roof would really move things along, would allow them to play un-interrupted from 10am-12am like they do here on RLA.

Looks like things have gotten underway today, hopefully everyone gets on and the matches are quick :)

Good stuff man. Maybe Ferrer is cooked.

Again wrong with a prediction of Murray's downfall. That match with Gasquet was brilliant in the first 2 sets - was the best quality I have seen at the French Open so far. Then after that Murray was way too good. Very impressive.

Stan did what he had to do and that sets up a Stan v Murray Semi-Final. Should be a cracker.

Good luck to Stosur but Muguruza is going to be a tough challenge.
