Title: West Coast 2017 season mega banter thread
Post by: LF on March 20, 2017, 07:16:58 PM
Time to start the talk for the season proper now
Seems to be some decent competition for spots down in defence this year, good thing means the boys will be desperate to hold their spot in the team which should push them to perform well.

Rucks obviously our biggest issue, if Nic Nat and Lycett were fit I'd say we finish top 2.  Just Lycett fit then prob top 4.  I think we finish 5-6 with our current ruck stocks, but might still sneak into that top 4 hopefully.

Ruckmen are overrated, especially with Priddis, Mitchell and Shuey on the ground. Would be nice to be fed by NN but not having him there won't hurt.

I'd say your fortunes rest with Wellingham, Masten, Sheed. Guns gonna gun, but it will be the 16th-24th men that dictate your fate. Don't think the Iggs had a top 2 list even if the rucks were fit and firing.

Ruckmen are overrated.

I agree to an extent, however NicNat is our most influential, dynamic player. Not having him is going to force us to change the way we play slightly.

Mitchell, Priddis, Shuey, Gaff though - pick who to tag of that lot!

Got everything crossed that Yeoy can start taking games by the scruff of the neck more, and guys like Masto and Redden are able to contribute week to week. The midfield is so damn important for us.

Petrie has been upgraded for Nic Nat
And Scotty has been put on the LTI list,no upgrade at this stage

Yeah some time last year, told the club he wanted to keep it on the low down so they didn't make it public

Great news though, he is our most important player by a country mile

Francis Watson - did some good things in the JLT and had a fantastic game in the twos on the weekend. Does he get a look in soon? Would be a great story.

I suggest he certainly will at some stage. Has a great head on his shoulders and speaks really well. Tough to break the side at the moment given our running defenders are so settled. Will be spending most of the year developing further in the WAFL.

I watched his post-draft presser and thought exactly that ele, seems like a really good kid and really hope he gets the opportunity because he deserves it. Watching his footage would be a handy third tall defender but as you say that Eagles backline looks very settled already.

Hmmm
Jetta and Hutch out Duggan and Butler in
Like I thought there would be a couple more changes this week,be nice if they started rewarding WAFL form and giving some of them a crack at it rather than playing the "my spot is safe" players whose form is questionable at times yet they hold their spot week after week.

They are still taking it easy with him

Sheed,Watson and Mutimer are the main 3 that should be getting a crack at it,Mutimer must be close tho as he has been our emergency the last couple of weeks.

It's not entirely an MCG thing, it's a Hawthorn thing - we just don't match up well and they do against us

Oh right haha. I think i saw somewhere he was still in a moonboot as well. Not 100% on that though

Partington was pretty good for East Perth with 31 and 1
Hutchings with 28 and 2 as well

Consecutive games played at the start of this round

Hurn - 73
Shuey - 67
JJK - 63
Sheppard - 57
Lecca - 38
Masten - 30
Wellingham - 28
Priddis  - 28

So 4 of the top 8 had their runs broken, its a bit sad that Masten has the 3rd best streak now  :o

Such a dismal day yesterday. Despite leading for most of the game, we were dominated by the Giants B-Team. Imagine when they have Coniglio, Devon Smith, Lobb, Haynes, Kennedy and the rest all fit and firing. If we can't beat them at Subi we won't beat them anywhere.

On the brightside, Jetta looked really really good for his first time ever. Hoping he keeps that up, as we are a much better side when he is getting 25ish possies and hitting the scoreboard

Half way into the second qtr I was 100% sure we would lose. I could just see it unfolding. Maybe it's all the years of watching the boys but I just have a really good feel for how they are going in game and if we will win or lose

As for Jetta, the only thing that frustrated me was the several times he was one on one and could have easily burnt passed his opponent but didn't. Use your pace man!

Haha mate I hope you chucked a few hunjy on the Giants @ 3's :P

Yeah I feel ya, think he only did it once in the last quarter, but 1/10 is a bad strike rate. He's clearly down on confidence (hence, not backing himself in) hopefully this game is a launching pad for the rest of the season

Yeah thank Christ JJK will be okay, still hope we don't rush him back in. Calves can certainly linger and while he isn't old, he is heading toward that 30+ mark and the last thing we want is reoccurring calf issues.

I'd love JJ, but 800k a year? Seems like massive overs when we already intercept well. Whilst his rebound/drive would be nice, its a massive chunk of the salary cap.

Little Gov and Matera though <3

Like? Sam Mitchell? His contract wouldn't be unworldly, the draw was the coaching gig at the end.

Matt Priddis would be on less than you'd think

Sam Butler is working for minimum wage

I doubt we'd be freeing up that much, and once those boys go I'd rather focus the funds through the midfield, plus re-signing some of the kids (Duggan, Sheed, etc) that will be getting to the point in their careers where they can demand more cash.

I love JJ's flair more than anyone, but we've got to keep a level head about these kinds of enormous list management decisions.

I wasn't referring to the older guys freeing up space - more so that when they go we need good youth coming through and JJ has to be considered

Presumably because everything is open to mod discretion and it's entirely up to how they interpret things and feel towards the topic.

There doesn't appear to be set protocol either and so whether a warning, deletion, lock etc happens seems to be more random than situational.

That's all mere speculation based on casual observations though.

I'm pretty pissed at Butler and Hill being made the scapegoats yet again

It's the one thing that I don't like about Simmo - being soft on guys like LeCras, Darling etc

It doesn't send a strong message, and those blokes get guaranteed games even if their form is woeful

I think Hill was one of your better players 2 weeks ago. Can understand Barras recall for Butler but unsure on dropping Hill rather than as you say Lecca or Darling. Realise no JJK may have saved Darling.

I'm one of his biggest fans, but how many more chances does Darling get?

I can't recall him ever being dropped and sent to the 2's

I think it's time, even with JJK out

Lycett was solid for East Perth so now would be the time to do it

Vardy+Lycett in the ruck, Petrie+Gov up forward

Yep, Darling needs to get dropped, then traded if he does nothing for the rest of the year.  I don't watch any WAFL but how's Tom Lamb going?  Playing or injured?

He's showed improvement over last year but I wouldn't say he is dominating. And thats the problem for us at the moment people are calling for the under performing established players to be dropped but there isn't many players standing up in the 2's

Wouldn't mind seeing Partington get a game

LeCras and JJK to return, and that's when Darling should get dropped (But I know it won't happen)

Karpany looked good on the weekend and although Cole was serviceable he probably really didn't make a difference at all

Masten is still on the outer too

The one thing in Darling's favour is that he supports JJK well. Not sure JJK and Petrie would work? Lycett comes in soon too so there is def a few changes that can/should be made

I mean, in case it wasn't clear, the reason that Schofield got given a week is because it was high and intentional with low impact. That constitutes a week.

However, the Eagles should challenge it and argue insufficient force (which it looked like it was), obviously the only issue with that is that he's not successful, he'll actually cop two weeks.

As an independent observer and after viewing footage why was not Oliver not cited for throwing the punch as well.  he had a closed fist and we heard about jumper punches.  So with their actions tonight the MRP has now condoned jumper punches and diving as free for all in future.

Eagles should challenge it but my concern is it was intentional and that may be the crux of the MRP's argument even though it only hit shoulder and minimum force. Apparently Dees doctor was seen treating jaw after incident which further complicates it.

Apparently Clarrie got some blood cleaned up too, so that part of the medical report would have also factored in. But yeah, the fact that it was high and intentional is the major issue.

I've watched it several times and it does not get his face,if it got him in the face unexpectedly like he said then why does his head not move even a little from the force, because sure as anything you cop something unexpectedly in the face/chin no matter what the force is your head will move back

Yeah, it was a really weird action, he went to shove him in the shoulder, but for some reason his elbow was on an angle and did connect with his chin...was super low impact and he reacted 5 seconds too late to the force.  This is the 2nd time Oliver has done this, earlier in the year Higgins brushed past him when he was getting all that attention and Oliver dropped like a sack of spuds, pathetic look and he needs to get a fine as he's done it twice now.
Title: Re: West Coast 2017 season mega banter thread

Still reckon Oliver should have been cited twice as well - One for the punch which led to the issue and then the dive.

Maybe the blood came from diving on the ground.
Title: Re: West Coast 2017 season mega banter thread
Post by: Toga on June 27, 2017, 10:54:37 AM
Yeah there clearly was a touch of high contact on Oliver's chin. But didn't seem to be much force in that, so would've thought him dropping like a sack of shower late would mean he's looked at for staging.

Fair enough for the MRP to have a look at Schofield but definitely didn't expect him to get booked, I'm pretty bewildered to be honest.

There are plenty of players who are higher up the chain than Oliver. Not sure why the AFL bother saying they can fine players for staging when they never do.

One thing this incident has done (by virtue of Oliver's back tracking after the incident) is show how embarrassed players get when accused of staging (as they should be). All the football shows on TV and online should have a dedicated segment each week for "outing" players diving/staging from that weekends games to embarrass the shower out of them to try and put a stop to it.

"He's very close," Simpson said of Partington. "He's done a lot right. He had 28 touches and kicked four (goals at East Perth) on the weekend and a couple of weeks ago had similar numbers, so he's ready.

"He knows how to kick a goal, he's not a big fella, but he's got that one trait that’s very hard to teach, which is natural ball-winning ability."

Partington and Wellingham are flying over for this weeks match

Changes i would like to see this week.

The obvious one is EMaC goes out with Injury.

Outs: Mckenzie, Cripps, Petrie, Priddis, Mitchell, Wellingham

In: Kennedy, Redden, Partington, Nelson, Schofield, F Watson.

Even Lamb and Murtimer can be looked at for selection. The guys we have aren't going to be good enough to make it to a grand final so lets start developing our future. Then Venables when fit, get him straight in.

Title: Re: West Coast 2017 season mega banter thread

Sam Mitchell   1   12   14   26   6   19    61.5
Matt Priddis   11   7   12   19   9   10    47.4

That last figure is their disposal efficiency from the game. Priddis and mitchell ranked 1 and 2 for WORST efficiency on ground.

Yes, these guys were champions. No, they are no longer the same players they were.

Mitchell and priddis can not coexist is the same team. They are the 2 slowest midfielders in the competition, they cant be lined up next to each other.

Yes we can make finals, but theres no point as we will be annihilated first game just like last year.

Simpson is delusional, you only have to browse through many of the social media comments from supporters, and the fan base is hugely in the favour of wanting Simpson gone.

Yeah I saw a week or so ago AFL had a list of the fans votes for coaches, and Simmo was 2nd bottom only above Eade

He seems to stick with the same group and doesn't make big changes often which I don't like, but at the same time it's hard to blood a bunch of kids when we are still in the finals hunt

It's not that bad though considering Karpany, Cole etc have been given a shot

I think the reality us supporters need to face is that we're just not a premiership contender, but we're in that awkward middle

Yeah spot on.

To make things worse, we are a considerably worse off without our 2 most influential players in Kennedy and Naitnui. Karpany is good when he gets it (skill wise), just needs to work on getting it a bit more, hopefully with time it comes. Cole took the Nelson role and i think he was okay defensively. Just skills needed a little clean up but will be better for the run.

The one the supporters hve been screaming for is Parto... How someone can consistently dominate at wafl level and cant be an inclusion the next week into a losing side is beyond me. He brings guys like masto and wellingham straight back who have proven numerous times they are not up to it.
Title: Re: West Coast 2017 season mega banter thread

Agree, Masten is a scrub and won't get any better at all. I don't mind Wellingham, but with the likes of Nelson flourishing he isn't a must start anymore

Partington needs a run, and not just one game then dropped either but who knows, we'd be crying for Darling to get dropped for ages and he finally turned it around the last two weeks
Title: Re: West Coast 2017 season mega banter thread

Darling is okay... As long as he isnt the key target. With kennedy back he will hve 3 defenders on him again and darling will be free to roam.

Masten named again... Surely not Simmo- Ive never seen so many turnovers at wafl level from one player. Yeah he gets it 30 times but is woeful when he does get it. Winning 3km time trials just doesnt warrant a game Simmo....

Yep agree, Parto needs a run of at least 6 or 7 in a row to get the feel for it. Wont get 6 in now...

I've resigned to the fact that we are a very average team, simply making up the numbers. Stop thinking we are good enough to challenge etc, because that's delusional. Not saying you are, but we need to be real with ourselves

Trust me, once you can do that too it makes things so much easier. I'm done with getting upset etc we're just nowhere near good enough

This current team has way too many passengers, and I can't believe how hard they choke in last quarters. I feel like every second week they can't hang onto a lead and close out games. It's shocking, and a major concern

The only surprising stat there is we are 13th for last quarters??? Thought we would easily be 18th... So embarrassing every last quarter we fold over. Gotta be lacking fitness. Getting run over the top of every single last quarter...

One positive to take out of that game and that JK proving he is best forward in the comp... Was a pleasure to watch him today. Other than that, can't find any other positives...

OUT: Priddis, Vardy, LeCras, Cripps
IN: Partington, Lycett (if fit), Karpany, Mutimer

Tell Redden he is not allowed to kick, handball only.

Tell Masten he is playing for his career in this next month of WAFL footy. Archetypal list clogger.

Tell Priddis he is no longer a walk up starter.

Tell Sam Mitchell to get his coaching hat on because thats where he should be next season.

I would love to see Franky Watson and Tom Lamb get debuts before the season is out.

I am trying to work out if Adam Simpson is a stubborn prick or if he's simply spineless and won't make statements at the selection table.

Honestly prepared for the same old Redden out for Masten shuffling of the deck chairs on the titanic type changes come Thursday.

Franky Watson for sure!!! Was killling it earlier this year before his injury. IS fast and has good skills. Something many of our players lack....

Could Masten go down as the worst 3rd draft pick of all time? Surely theres been no one worse?

I've seen more articles about Simmo and WCE in general this week, than I have all year and I for one am very happy to see this

It's about time the torch was put on us, and it's time to see change

One thing I noticed was:

Simpson said second-year midfielder Luke Partington wasn't far off a debut but was wary of external expectations being too high on the ball-magnet who is still working on his deficiencies.

Also saw that if Lycett doesn't play this week, then he will be iced for the rest of the year

Simmo, Lecca and others finally under the microscope - something that's been needed

Let's see how this all plays out

FINALLY!

Partington named on the wing

Brisbane at home, he had to get a run this week and I look forward to seeing how he goes

Party Time <3

Brisbane bringing over a very young/inexperienced team. If we are remotely serious about making finals we need to be winning this by 10+ goals.

I would much rather see more kids get a run than us make finals, probably won't get either :P

Sammy is officially retiring at the end of this season and will take his coaching role on next year for us.
I'm really looking forward to what more he can bring to us

And yay Partington finally.
The excuse of him still having some deficienies in his game is fine but atm all the players have something they need to work on anyway and I hope he gets in there on the weekend and gives it a real crack

Does it give us a bit of salary cap space to play with?

Almost too keen for this post-season list cleanout :P

Oh it's going to be fantastic!  Butler, Wellingham, LaCras, Masten, Hill, possibly Cripps?  E-Mac? Schofield?

And hopefully the clear out will help us bring over guys like Mitch McGovern and Matera, rather have these 2 guys crumbing rather than LeCras, Hill and Cripps.

Clearly Masten is so far off the pace now its not funny. Needs to be dropped. On the brightside Redden is having an excellent finish to the season.

In all seriousness, there is something terribly wrong with this group, mentally

They just cannot get it together and close out games, and opposition now knows this.

These blokes are mentally fragile in crunch times, and when it continues to happen it only makes it worse

I don't personally think any of those boys would be on big coin, but through sheer weight of numbers if we can cull a ton of blokes and go through the draft that will leave us some money left over.

Gotta remember (due to his injury) Nic Nat didn't reach a lot f performance triggers in his contract and thats where a lot of the Smitchell money came from

This is my take on who will go this year

Gone:
Mitchell, Priddis, Brophy

Will probably retire:
Butler, Lecras, Petrie

Trade/Delist:
Hill, Giles, Mackenzie/Schofield, McInnes, Masten

Questionable Rookies:
Lamb, Tunbridge

I included Masten but I have a gut feeling we will keep him haha
Maybe we might keep one of Giles/Petrie, especially if McInnes goes.
We should trade one of Emac/Schoey
Lamb hasn't done anything special this year in the WAFL, 16.1 Disp, 4.3 marks, 1.2 goals, 2.7 Tackles
Tunbridge has been on the list 4 years now, probably time to go.

So thats 13 players which is probably too many to move on in one year unless we actually trade :)

Havn't seen anything official about it yet, but I completely expected him to play on

His best is past him, but he is going to be important for us over the next 12 months as we lose a lot of experience and transition

Don't be too upset, he still has value to our club

A recipe for losing playing guys that only have a crack every second week , looking at his year seems to be a fairly common thing

Yeah if you added up all the good footy Jetta played this year it would probably equal 1 full game in total

He is very frustrating to watch, especially when he is given the ball on the wing all alone with open space in front of him and he just casually runs and looks lazy. Rarely ever turns it on and runs as fast/break the lines like we expect him to

Classic bullshower rumours tbh. If that was the case he'd be cut. I'm fine with the re-signing, we aren't exactly blessed with small-medium fwds. Everyone is hyping Willie Rioli, but he can't play with ruined hamstrings, and we havent even seen him at AFL level yet, its an enormous step from WAFL ressies... Having Lecca there for another 12 months is fine by me. I just hope we give Tim Kelly and Luke Ryan (and to a lesser extent Haiden Schloithe) a good look from the WAFL.

Ehhh Jetta bashing is getting old. We just have to acknowledge that he's a wildly inconsistent player and he's played his best footy. When we see glimpses of his best its exciting as flower, and who knows, at some stage it could be the difference between winning and losing a final, as it was against the Crows in what was basically an elim final for us in round 23.

Not bashing him just think no use playing someone for the occasional effort better off playing a young guy who will have a crack every week and if the coach excepts an insipid effort like his in a cut throat final maybe he needs a foot up the arse as well  ;)
