Title: Olympics
Post by: Kellogscrunchynut on July 07, 2012, 10:52:59 PM
Thought I'd get a thread starting on the Olympics for discussion about whom will win the most medals and what Aussies do well.
Title: Re: Olympics
Post by: Spinking on July 07, 2012, 10:57:53 PM
Reckon this may be a weak Olympics for Aus. Don't think we are as strong in swimming, cycling and shooting as we have been in the past, but I'm not sure if we may make up for it in other places.

Potential gold - James Magnussen, Sally Pearson, Steve Hooker???
Title: Re: Olympics
Post by: Kellogscrunchynut on July 07, 2012, 11:17:11 PM
Matthew Mitcham is also a chance.

Matthew Mitcham is also a chance.

Hadn't even heard of him. Which sport?
Title: Re: Olympics
Post by: CrowsFan on July 08, 2012, 06:15:39 PM
You've never heard of Mitcham?? :o

He won gold in the 10m platform diving in Beijing, and whilst doing it scored the highest ever score for a single dive in history. Amazing athlete! Should bring home another gold for the Aussies :)

Post by: Spinking on July 08, 2012, 06:19:23 PM
Nice! Will definitely keep an eye on the diving!
Title: Re: Olympics
Post by: Jay on July 08, 2012, 07:00:47 PM
Mitcham, Pearson & Magnussen are only real chances. Yes no Hooker, he is finished IMO

Steph Rice may be up there as well

We'll have to wait and see

What about team sports? Do Aus still go alright in Hockey, Basketball etc?
Title: Re: Olympics
Post by: CrowsFan on July 08, 2012, 07:14:59 PM
Should win the mens hockey, but there are a few teams who can challenge them (mainly Germany, Enlgand etc), but they should still win it. Will be tougher for the womens, but hopefully they can get a medal...

As for most Medals does anyone reckon that Phelps and Bolt can build on the success of their previous Games.
Title: Re: Olympics
Post by: Spinking on July 08, 2012, 10:52:19 PM
Both have been down lately but I'd love to see them hit top form. Is Phelps greatest Gold Medal winner ever yet?
Title: Re: Olympics
Post by: Kellogscrunchynut on July 08, 2012, 11:27:38 PM
Yep he has 14 gold medals to his name, but most medals overall goes to a Soviet gymnast named Larisa Latynina with 18 medals total two more than Phelps with 16.

We should win the mens hockey although Des Abbott is out of the Olympics after doing his knee.

Also i think we have the current BMX ladies champ????
Title: Re: Olympics
Post by: PowerBug on July 09, 2012, 12:49:43 AM
How to Pole vault (with PowerBug):
Step 1: grab the pole and get ready to run.
Step 2: Run at the bar you need to go over.
Step 3: Go over the bar.

*Note: At no stage should you let go of the pole, that is a big no no*

Hooker today didn't register a jump. :-\ Chances looking slim.
Title: Re: Olympics
Post by: CrowsFan on July 09, 2012, 01:53:28 AM
Fairly sure you are meant to let go of the pole PB, otherwise you will knock the bar off with the pole :P

Will the US still have dominance or is there anyone who will take it up to them?

I remember watching them go around in 92 - greatest basketball team to ever take the court - Jordan, Bird, Pippen, Robinson, Stockton, Malone, Drexler, Ewing, Barkley and Magic.  What a team!

WHY THE FLOWER ARE YOU SHOWING USA V FRANCE IN THE BASKETBALL DELAYED. NO ONE CARES ABOUT THE AUSTRALIAN GAME, AND THEY CHOOSE TO SHOW THE EQUESTRIAN OVER THE USA GAME BECAUSE IT HAS AUSSSIES IN IT. YOU HAVE 8 BLOODY CHANNELS YET YOU CAN'T SHOW IT LIVE. I AM SICK OF THIS COUNTRY ONLY CARING ABOUT THEMSELVES.

Lift your game foxtel.

But it's early days yet. Watched a bit of the bike race & the womens basketball.

I think they have had a split. I saw HG commentating on 7 the other day though. I showed my two daughters (nine and twelve) you tube shows on Roy and HG of Eric the eel and the gymnastics and they were laughing so much it was really cute. Roy and HG have made the Olympics over recent years it would be great to have them back.

Magnerson has to answer in the best way possible and win in his individual 100m. It will be a tough ask after being floored by that result. He has a couple of days to regroup though.

Magnussen was super arrogant after the heats and it may be unpatriotic of me but I hate that attitude and I was hoping he'd fail on some level. Hope the swim team bounces back but I hope "the missile" learns a bit of humility out of this as well.

i have thought of 2 drinking games for the Olympics.

The first one is much like when 7 have the Australian Open Tennis and put on "After the Tennis" ads, everytime someone mentions "After the Olympics" you drink.

The other one is have a drink every time they show the Cathy Freeman ad, where the young girl runs on the farm

trust me, you wont be sober for long

His actually pretty smart for leaving now. Motorcylcle riding is pretty dangerous. He hasn't got anything left to prove. He has got a child and if he doesn't have the motivation he would be better to spend that time with his child.

Contractual obligations as far as the team and sponsorships.

If he pulled out mid-season before he can he'd be out of pocket millions, which would not be good for his kid.

It's not passion, it's just seeing the season out because he's obligated, it's not passion, it's just doing it because he has to contractually and to have enough $ for his kids.

He can still ride, just doesn't have to pull to keep racing when 1. He would rather do other things and 2. he would rather leave now so he doesn't suffer a serious injury. He would be losing a lot of money and a lot of supporters if he pulled out mid-season.

I think you need to clear up the definition of dangerous...

Dangerous; as in, there is a likely chance of that person being hurt

Dangerous; When someone gets hurt, they get hurt badly

It's the first definition according to the dictionary but people view it as the second definition that I made up...

It is true that Motorcycling is not dangerous as there is a very small chance of injury (definition), but if you do get injured, you get injured badly.

Did I complicate things?

No I'm not. Retiring from a sport because it's "dangerous" is this biggest BS ever.

Motorcylce Racing is not that "dangerous". I think you are comparing it to riding a motorbike on the streets. They are professional mate. A crash happens one in a blue moon. A huge one is even more unlikely. And someone not returning to the sport after an accident is even more unlikely.

As unlikely as it may be it can still happen. I'm sure Marco Simoncelli didn't expect to die when he got onto the bike before he died? Casey knows what can happen in motorcycling so he is going to try and experience other things.

Ok she didn't win gold but she has a silver. She should be congratulated instead of the disappointment. Know-one would have thought she could get gold if it wasn't for her Olympic record in the heats. I think the Aussie media should take a step back for a while as were not going to be bringing home the gold like in years gone. Were a chance in sailing, rowing and we have a boxer in the last 16 who beat the yank.

I had to babysit at my sisters last night (no Foxtel - I have Foxtel and it was live) and the Aus v Spain game started at 6pm (WST).  On channel 9 they decided to show equestrian.  I then think... hang on, they have 2 channels running so I flick over to GEM only to see the exact same feed.  ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME..... why on earth do you have 2 channels running the exact same feed.  Surely showing 2 different feeds would get you more people watching your coverage?

have to agree also with Valk and Roost - Showing and Irish Horse during an Australian Basketball match what next. Foxtel has an excellent coverage. The only drawback is a few of the commentators as they have loaded up with AFL, NRL and whoever. Susie Oniell looks embarressed at times in the Swimming with Rebecca ""i know it all Wison" and the rugby dude. James Brayshaw is ok but feels out of his depth in Rowing. The sailing have pommie commentators who follow their own boats.

Bruce McAvaney will be missed when the Athletics is on as the Olympics wont be the same with a "speciaL"COMMENT.

Have just watched the replay after hearing the live broadcast where the commentators said he did not hit the wall hard and after watching would have to agree he seemed to roll in rather than straight on.  But hey a silver meadl in the Olympics not to be sneezed at and not far of his PB either.

He hasn't won a gold yet, he's meant to be the best freestyler there is, poor effort so far if you ask me.

Why, because they're from China?? If they were from Australia, you wouldn't be suspicious. Don't judge.

Anyone else getting sick of the bias towards Swimming, and what will be Athletics, shown by the Channel 9. Channel 7 also did it as well when they were broadcasting the Olympics.

Do you know we had a Silver Medalist in C1 last night, who is 18, has a massive pedigree, and has a massive future. She hardly got a mention when I watched the TV this morning between 5:30 and 7:00. It was Swimming, swimming, swimming... Is this the Olympics, or the Swimming World Championships.

Maggotsman got 20 times the attention for winning Silver that Fox did last night for Silver.

That's probably because they pumped extra money into cycling this time, whereas we cut funding to alot of our olympic sporting programs hence the reason for our lower medal tally this time compared to previous years. Because of the funding cuts our good coaches move overseas so they can get paid what they are worth, subsequenlty lowering our chances of winning medals and at the same time increasing other countries chances of medals  :(

Anyone else getting sick of the bias towards Swimming, and what will be Athletics, shown by the Channel 9. Channel 7 also did it as well when they were broadcasting the Olympics.
I'm not getting sick of it because unfortunately I've already succumbed to acceptance that this is the way it will always be. It was always this way with Channel 7 and nothing has changed with Channel 9  :(

Problem is over the last few olympics the Australian swimming team has had a headline act (Ian Thorpe, Libby Trickett) someone who the team bases itself around, and now for these Olympics they put all the spotlight on Missile because they needed a poster boy, when really he is no better than the other swimmers and shouldn't be put under the amount of pressure he was.

History of Australia in the Olympics shows that after hosting the decline in medals inevitably starts. After Melbourne in 1956 our hall steadily declined until in 1976 we didnt even get a gold medal. (Hence the AIS began). Our medal hall then increased to reach our best in Athens 4 years after Sydney. We will undoubtedly have a new surge around 2044 when the olympics will be held in Perth (only city that will able to afford it.)
Title: Re: Olympics
Post by: Ringo on August 04, 2012, 02:20:29 PM
When you look at Countries that are winning Gold medals to this year there is more spread across countries so obviously some countries will decline in numbers.  France for example won 4 gold medals in the pool and this was their sum total of all Gold medals in swimming for previous games.  At The moment we are even behind NZ who have 3 gold medals and that hurts.

I can't wait to see Channel 9 with egg on their face very soon. We have 3 people/teams leading in the sailing, would you know? Will all happen in the next couple of days...

Well done to Mitchell Watt. A future star.

@ Mailman if you think Maggotsman was the only person we could pin our hopes on for gold then you don't know your sports.

Pearson, Watt, 50k walk, Equestrian chick, Densham, Oarsome Foursome, Team Pursuit, Sailors were all genuine chances of winning gold. Only reason they focus on Magottsman is because they think we only like swimming!

The best part from last night was the English losing in the soccer :D

BTW, he won't win. Yohan Blake will break the Olympic record and win.

Ive been watching the sailing all week and its quite good. The tactics etc are quite excellent and would you believe Australia has no commentary for it on foxtel. We have to put up with pommie commentators following their own boats. Australia can possibly bring home 3 golds and we have little interest in it.

May be a stupid question: Why do men run 110m hurdles and woman 100m hurdles?

Yep, a true legend, especially after he wins the 200m as well.

Big congrats to 19yo Steve Solomon, a contraversial selection, on making the final. Lets hope this forever shuts John Stefanson up  :-X

Good luck tonight to Shane Perkins, Solomon, Alana Boyd, Michael Diamond (leading the trap qualification - wonder if 9 will show) and the best of luck to Tom Slingsby who really only needs to cross the line to win Gold.

Wonder how much Channel 9 will show of Slingsby considering he's been racing for a week. It starts at 11pm. They are just showerhouse!!!

Argh I'm so annoyed!!! I set my alarm for 6.40 so I could get up and watch it (had to be up a little after 7 anyway), but wake up this morning look at my phone and it's7!! Somehow had managed to set the alarm to PM instead of AM so I missed the race :'(

Great effort by Solomon to make the final. First Aussie male in 24 years to make the 400 final!! Not expecting any medal from him, but still an outstanding performance by the kid.

Slingsby needs to finish 7th or better to guarantee gold. He leads the cypriat by 14 pts. The medal race (11th race) has double points so if he finishes 8th and the cyproit wins then they will tie.
Saw Solomans run and he really kranked it up in the last 30m to get a PB to make the final.
Michael Diamond as well for his 3rd gold medal.

We're in the hunt for 4 golds in Sailing, and still with limited coverage by 9... I wonder whether Sailing will be the new Swimming at Rio and get some coverage :P

I couldn't believe when I woke and saw Diamond had missed a medal, but that's the Olympics. He didn't choke, it's tough out there.

Again, a big congratulations to Shane Perkins for winning Bronze - well deserved, plus young Solomon - bring on Rio :)

regarding Diamond, it was the windiest day yesterday for the shooting and back luck to the fella to shot 20/25 in the last round to finish 4th, although the guy who won got 24/25

That's just the POM's whinging because Meares knocked QV over with a bit.of a foul move, so they think she cheated again. Also QV stated before the games that she was a fair rider, but Meares wasn't, hence the disbelief that QV could be relegated for something against the rules...

Even on fox the commentators are British as its quite obvious no-one thought we were a chance in sailing and we could bring home 4 golds in sailing alone. Egg on everyone face I'm sure.......

I've been watching the sailing from the word go and its quite frustrating hearing them talk only about the British boats all the time.

35 - 16 in the 4th.

I watched the 1st half in bed (5am start over here in Perth) and was totally disgusted with the coverage by channel 9.  flowerING PATHETIC.  They go to an advert during a SUBSTITUTION.  Are you flowering serious.  Then in the 2nd half they go to a commercial on a foul and then when they come back from the advert Australia call a timeout and then no advert.

GET YOUR shower TOGETHER CHANNEL 9.  To quote the Comic Book Guy

Has anyone seen Channel 9 (or any Australian media for that matter) mention anything about the Women's Elliott Sailing event?

The Aussie girls have won 14 out of 15 races they've contested and are into the semi-finals on tonight, yet I have not seen or heard them mentioned once in Australian media. I also just did some online searching and found out the Men's 470 duo look to be guaranteed gold or silver heading into tomorrow's medal race.

I dont follow basketball by why isn't Andrew Bogut playing for Australia we need his 7ft frame in this match.
too busy having a go at Buddy and the AFL, dont know why.....

I don't have foxtel however I assume they've mentioned the progress of the Aussies in these events?
The sailing comentators have mentioned it the last 2 nights whilst commentating the sailing and Kenny mentioned it late last night

As said before by Jayman - Bogut is injured.  He injured his ankle late in the NBA season and is still rehabbing.

He was also taken out of context (surprise surprise).  He was on SEN (not sure if was Harf Time or Morning Glory) and was asked about drugs in our culture.  He said that his opinion should be that its 1 strike and you're out and that quite often when he goes out in Melb he gets asked if he wants any drugs.

Didn't see that one coming, but a good surprise none-the-less.  :D

We should pocket a couple more golds in the sailing.  8)

They did come second at the WC last year, so not really that unexpected. Probably unexpected moreso due 9's unabilty to promote the soorts that are likely to win gold...

This!

9 have been hopeless this year. Not only their coverage but commentators have been poor (bar Brayshaw who I don't mind).
Bring it to channel 7 and get Bruce on the job!  ;D

I was watching a replay of the dream team match on fox and it went to the canoe sprint's and I was enjoying how funny it looked. Then came the kayaking and after hearing nothing I wasny expecting much and was pleasantly surprised.

Take that Kazakhstan, we will take our top 10 spot back

Usain Bolt what a champion! He is one of the greatest olympians ever.

Stayed up very late to watch the opals...they were so good, well Cambage was so good, in the first half....lacked offensive options and also got killed on the glass. Lets get the bronze girls :)

and for all those that care about Lebron James.....

LeBron James recorded the first triple-double in US Olympics history. His final line: 11 points, 12 assists, 14 rebounds

Jackson is a superstart, Cambage has massive potential and once she learns to use her body strength she will be really good.  She is too weak at the moment but she is only 19 or 20 so give her time

Looking through everything we do not have any more medal chances. Three runners in the marathon but their PB's are way off the Kenyans and Ethiopians.

Kazakstan have 6 golds and they have 2 boxers in the finals and they may pass us on the medals table.

Wade did not do that IMO despite everyone else thinking he did based on his 3rd spot on last years PER

Agree with that

no doubting that when on song and making jump.shots, he cant be stopped...type of player that can change games...dont think Harden can do that although him coming off the bench would be an asset for any team
