Lance Armstrong has announced he will not fight the USADA charges put up against him and this means he will likely be stripped of his 7 Tour de France titles

EDIT: Now made official by the UCI. Armstrong has been banned for life and stripped of his 7 titles

Armstrong's attorneys contend that he has "passed every drug test ever administered to him in his career - a total of 500 to 600 tests... more drug tests than any athlete in history."

LIVESTRONG (http://www.livestrong.org/) Lance  8)

This one man has made a difference to more people's lives than we could ever imagine. I personally don't care if he had a bionic implant, the man is a Crusader.

People are now saying he will forever be known as a 'cheat'

I will only ever think of him as a 'hero'.

he did a federal investigation for 2 years
i can see where his coming from it would get to a point where you go look i fought for 2 years cleared my name and people still wanna hang me nothing i can ever do will stop them weather rightly or wrongly

think about it like this
your accused of a crime one they reckon your guilty of though u won't go to jail (since lance isn't)
u fight the case for 2 years and get found innocent
the toll it's taken on you and your family and friends every day people asking you did you do it, how's the case going and such nothing else but that every day for 2 years
then your found innocent and then 2 days later they decided to try you again and claim your guilty
yeah u wanna keep fighting to clear your name but can you go through it all again?
can you put your life on hold for another possibly 2 years just to have people still cry your guilty afterwards?

thats what it is with lance even if he keeps fighting and beats it there's still going to be heaps of people claiming his a drug cheat regardless of the result
so after 2 years of fighting to be found innocent and still be calle da cheat 2 years of life you ain't getting back and go through it again just for people to still call you a cheat regardless?

Listening to the radio last night...

Apparently Lance said the authority who wants to strip him of his titles has no authority or power to do so.

IMO if drugs/performance enhancers are just too difficult to deal with and taint the sport... Allow all the drugs! Allow all drugs then everyone can take them and at least we know it's a level playing field again :o

This tbh... Have to question the reliability of the witnesses though considering they are all drug cheats... Yes he may be tired of fighting the allegations and he still would of had his rep tainted even if he got off these charges too but this way it seems like he is just admitting it...

Maybe he is admitting his guilty, by not admitting his guilty but dropping the case.  :P

But how was he never caught earlier? Surely he was tested the most of all the cyclist like Swan is?

That's just it isn't it windi. He has passed every single other drug test ever done on him at any time of the year and any time of the day. Everyone else gets caught but he never has, do they really think he is some sort of evil genius who is capable of faking every single drug test when he isn't even aware of when he is going to be tested? He has had drug tests at 5 in the morning at his home during all times of the year. You can't beat that many tests if you are guilty!
Title: Re: Lance Armstrong to be stripped of his 7 TDF titles

just another thought... Lance Armstrong has said many times that he never tested positive to doping. However, he has never actually said that he has never taken performance-enhancing drugs

I am not necessarily saying he is guilty, but just a thought that's all... make of it what you want

Still, it was a witch hunt to get him and he has never been proven guilty..

Title: Re: Lance Armstrong to be stripped of his 7 TDF titles

well the USADA don't actually have the authority to strip him of his titles, the UCI or the TDF organisers do... they said they have taken USADA's findings into account but are waiting to receive a detailed report explaining USADA's decision before they act on whether Armstrong keeps the titles or not

NOT-SO-FUN FACT: Of all the riders that finished in the Top 5 of all the TDF's between 1999-2005, only THREE of those riders have never been found guilty of doping (or been in connection with a doper) in their cycling history...

I think it's unlikely that anything will actually happen from this.

They don't have the power to strip his titles just outright and considering he's never been caught as guilty they'll probably let it pass.

Quote
But if it's proven that you didn't and you know you didn't that shouldn't matter. As far as I'm concerned he just admitted guilt

What's the point in him doing the whole process again? Lance already realised a long time ago that continuing to fight this just for the gain of material success is artificial at best. He's already realised that there's no feasible case against him.

For what he's been through, let the man live his life.

nobody can take his greatest title... beating cancer!

that said US athletes have taken a fair dent over the passed decade, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemons, Marion Jones, Lance Armstrong, Mark McGuire, Sammy Sosa, Rafael Palmeiro, Manny Ramirez, all highly praised in their respective fields have been done for PED's, im sure there r even more but thats just off the top of my head, all those baseballers were headed to the Hall Of Fame, in particular Bonds and Clemons were in G.O.A.T consideration for their positions
Title: Re: Lance Armstrong to be stripped of his 7 TDF titles

I'll always hold Lance in a high regard for what he and his Livestrong organisation have done. I have to seperate the two issues as his value and inspiration to cancer victims and those that will be afflicted by this horrible desease in the future, his contribution is massive to the cause.

That being said, what he has been involved in with drugs and cycling and the standover tactics he used to bully others into it is nothing short of discusting. The legend as a cyclist is gone, he wasnt what we believed he was, he had been caught before but had that conveniently quashed with oh i took something to help me recover that i was prescribed by a doctor who had conveniently back dated the prescription to suite the story.

The French were busy trying to produce a test that would show the smallest amounts EPO that previously were undetectable, they went back to 1999 samples not just from Lance but alot of cyclists to find a base line for their test they had been successful in producing and low and behold theres EPO in Lances specimens dating that far back.

You can sugar coat it or dress it up however you want, keep your head in the sand i dont care. People can say argh hes just tired of defending himself, thats rubbish the reality is it would cost alot of money to attempt to defend this and he cant, he would be found overwelmingly guilty and whatever it cost would be gone. You can not defend the indefencible in a court of law. He has many wealthy friends who would of thrown millions at him to help defend himself but its my belief that he said no knowing full well he'd be found guilty as he is and a lot more would of come out. The trial would be covered by very media outlet in the world and the damage to Live Strong would be alot greater. I find it hard to fathom that so many still feel he is not guilty when 26 other individuals are stating otherwise. I understand the want to believe in a hero, in something that is just supreme to all about him, having to admit that to oneself isnt always easy.

One thing ive learnt in life is if you look hard enough at every terrible sittuation or event you can always find some good. Live Strong is the beauty in this very ugly situation. If all this had to happen so Live Strong could be what it is today then i can live with it, but am i right or am i wrong, i dont know the answer myself to be honest. A man with just the smallest of IQ would have enough sense to say Hey Live Strong wouldnt be what it is today if it wasnt for Lance and EPO. Hard to argue with but as i said i can live with it in the hope that so many with cancer that are helped by Live Strong get the chance to do the same, live.

Edit: to suggest that everyone be allowed to take drugs to level the playing field is a nonsense. You just have to go back to what East Germany were doing in the 60's and 70's to their athletes in order to produce results at major sporting events. Some of these poor souls later died premature deaths due to what they took, women had  children that had major health issues, men became sterile it just goes on and on. If you think for one second this wouldnt happen today you are wrong. What drives this is money,
money money money and i have no doubt the health of athletes would be a second consideration in time in the persuit of money. Do you honestly think if another country found the magic elixer to drive a sprinter to smash world records that they would give it to the world, depending on the country i seriously doubt it, ask yourself would China, would Russia would the Republic of Nth Korea, i have serious doubts these countries would and there would be many more who wouldnt.

hmmmm its becoming increasingly the case that when someone dominates a sport for a period of time, it is eventually shown that they were using some sort of performance enhancement. Its a bit sad really but its what happens when there is so much financial reward and fame that comes with sporting success these days that people will do whatever they can to obtain it.

Yeh true col, i feel so sorry for all those doing it clean working their butts of daily and for years to achieve some form of success to also have themselves questioned and those that do the same only to be beaten by someone thats done half the work but wacked a needle in their arm. The innocent will always suffer. Take Usain Bolt (spelling could be dodgey) for example, because of what Lance and other athletes have done in the past only to be caught out would have people thinking is Bolt for real or is it the drugs,
this so unfair on him and everyone like him.

yeah exactly, its just going to be a recurring theme forever unless there comes a time where the testing of drugs jumps ahead of the drug takers (which probably won't ever happen) to wipe out drug cheating once and for all.

To be honest I don't really care about him. What angers me is that there's a cancer centre here in Adelaide that is now laying dormant due to its ties with Livestrong and I was told yesterday it may never be used.

this sort of thing is not what u want to see, u cant build a house without a solid foundation, or it falls down...

as far as the doping goes, was he the one that introduced it to cycling? probably not, there was a culture of doping their before him and after, i guess the point im trying to make is if everyone was doping and he was the best, if nobody was doping he would have been the best, so really the issue lies with the culture and poor testing, im in no way absolving him nor sticking up for him i just think its a case of a sport rotten at the core, this has already damaged cycling to the fullest extent, sponsors jumping off credibility shredded, Major League Baseball was damaged awfully by the stars i previously stated and the record books r a mess bcos of it...

Everyone in his team maybe. Drugs may have taken different effects on different people's bodies.  Thing is that he is the one who suffers, DON'T TAKE DRUGS and you won't be there in the first place. I would rather win no TDF's and not have the feeling for the rest of my life that I cheated so many wins & then lost them rather than win & have to deal with the pain for the rest of my life.

Marcz has a pretty fair point with the, "cheat or be cheated"

Cycling is basically at that point right now.

You're either a Contador/Armstrong, who gets glory far beyond others.

Or you're a Cadel Evans, you work-rate is unquestioned but in the end you'll still get cheated on the day.

That's the reality that pro cyclists face. Potentially you could otherwise face not having a career at all. There's a lot of money up for grabs if you can perform and hence there is a great pressure point on whether to cheat or not.

I still respect Armstrong for his charity work and I guess I still see him as a battler regardless of whether he cheated

Yeah MM, BUT......He loses his titles & his name is in tatters. Cadel is a fighter, He went the easy way....Cadel could still win another TDF.

But in the end:

Lance's TDFs: 0
Cadel's TDFs: 1 & counting.

True, but it took the Cycling association a huge amount of time to actually catch Armstrong.

That involved over 20 court cases.

How many other players have retired without being caught?

Who's to say Miguel Indurain or Bernard Hinault or Greg LeMond are as clean as we believed? (they are probably fine btw)

They have glory, fame, money.

That's what's on offer

They have glory, fame, money.

That's what's on offer
If they were on drugs, I'm sure they have lots of sleepless nights thinking about it. I would rather not win TDF or any titles so many times & have knowledge that you were FAIR when competing.

Thanks for seeing my POV MM2, like i said when it comes to some ppl we r righteous in our beliefs as u r Torps, im right there with u mate its not for me, i wont be defined by my achievements, more for what i stand for, for my actions that stem from those beliefs, those that arent could easily be tempted by the carrot, the everyone is doing it, this is the norm... never ever go against ur own moral values ppl no matter what the prize, no eternal reward will emancipate ur conscience from the guilt!

When it boils down Lance was weak, for whatever reason he did the doping bcos he A didnt have a problem with it or B he wasnt listening to his inner self, his plumb line.

Yeah mate, all about your values in life. For me it would be better to go to bed at night thinking I don't care the result as long as I'm  fair than ' The drugs I just took should win me tomorrow's race'. I would feel worse knowing I've won 7 TDF's but taken drugs to win them than not winning anything at all and not taking drugs. Cycling may be a 'team' sport in some ways but you race, you win races, you lose races, you take the blame if you take drugs and you lose the titles you win if you take drugs to win them.

Indurain had physical advantages from when he was quite young I believe.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miguel_Indurain

Lung capacity was 7.8 litres compared to most people's 6 litres.  :o

This is where he'll be up on perjury charges... If you saw the Four Corners report Monday week ago, you will see that he lied under oath in regards to these insurers who paid him these bonuses.

It will eventually be revealed that Evans is also a drug user...

What makes you think that CF. I'm sure not everyone in cycling is on drugs, and this man is clean IMO.

Im with CF, it will be interesting to see if any one isnt a drug user. All these tests that they have passed, obviously more investment has been with the dugs rather than the drug tests.

Not certain, but more the fact that everyone who has won the tour in the last decade or so has been on drugs to do it, so why would Evans be the only exception to that? He was racing in a field with others on drugs so surely he needed them as well. As you said fletch not everyone is on drugs, but none of them ever win anything ;)
The sport has become extremely corrupt, which is a real shame since I used to really love watching the cycling...

There was an article in the Sydney Morning Herald on the people being tainted in the last 10-15 years from places 1st, 2nd and 3rd

I think there was like 10 out of 45 left that hadn't been found doing anything illegal (paraphrasing here)

Frank Schleck has been suspended for doping already

Andy Schleck and Cadel haven't been caught as of yet

Our P.E teacher was talking about what 'drug' he was using.

Technically it's not a drug. It's an illegal ergogenic aid.  ;)

What he allegedly does was to take out around 500 ml of his blood and then refrigerate it. Let the blood come back with the heart replenishing it. Then inject the blood back into himself.

Bam, you now have more red blood cells. Thus a bigger aerobic capacity.

It's kind of like altitude training.  :P

This to is rife in cycling from the interviews ive seen, whats more worrying is leading scientists around the world all say this is practically impossible to detect let alone stop. The interview i saw said that they would remove a litre of blood and as you said windi let the body replenish itself naturally then just before a comp reinject it thus giving them X amount of red blood sells more than anyone else and a distinctive advantage.

or essentially leveling the already wonky playing field :P if everyone is doing it then the guys who won, would have won anyway if the sport was actually clean, cant say im entirely surprised, sports science is always pushing the boundaries

On one level I wish none of it had come out... He was an inspiration to so many people but guess it did seem too good to be true. Some of the things he said about people who said he doped are really flowered up.

Deserves every bit of what he gets from the fallout from this, he didn't even really show any remorse, just was sorry he got caught essentially. You can kinda say he did a lot of good with cancer awareness (then again would have done more good putting it towards a cure....who doesn't know about cancer in this day and age?) but it almost seems as though he created that foundation as a diversion away from the rumors of his drug cheating. The amount of people's lives he has ruined through either attacking them when they called him out, or, honest athletes who were denied a chance to make a living doing what they loved due to not being able to compete with what these guys were doing offsets any good he may have done in my mind.

To be honest i'd love to see him bankrupt after paying back prize money and money accrued from the deformation suits he filed for years and ended up winning which the claims are now being proved as accurate, and sitting in jail for a period of time for lying under oath as he did over n over for how many years?

Deserves what he gets from this

You see Torps, as long as you don't take drugs, you won't do well in cycling

well actually you do well until you get caught haha

You misread the post but yeah you're right  ;D
In the end you don't & you have to live with a bad feeling.

Shows you how good Cadel is.

Who says Cadel didn't take drugs? Took them years to catch Armstrong, so could still get Evans...

Greg LeMond always belived that Armstrong was using drugs and Armstrong always used to say that LeMond was just jealous, I wonder how LeMond feels now.  :P

watched the 2nd part of Oprah's interview, part of me feels sorry for him but I also think he deserves it

Yeah I agree tom. Watched both parts and even though I know he deserves it there is still a part of me that feels sorry for him. Although he raised an interesting point that previous people who have been caught have been suspended for 6 months, yet he has received a lifetime ban from any sanctioned sporting event. Seems rather harsh when put in to perspective...

He ain't sorry at all, he's just sorry he got caught. He's ruined people's lives, sued them for defamation and won all the while knowing they were telling the truth and he was lying. Some of these people were his friends. Stuff him, no sympathy for him whatsoever. He belongs in jail.

Just judging from the implicated/guilty of doping cyclists who have stated Cadel was one of the only clean ones.

That's enough for me to believe Cadel's clear... for now.
