Title: Wimbledon Fantasy & Discussion Thread
Post by: BB67th on June 22, 2014, 07:59:21 PM
Not sure if anyone is interested, but I've come across a fantasy game for Wimbledon, which starts tomorrow night.

Basically there are 5 attributes; Serve, Power, Returns, Net Play and Mind. You pick one player in each section and score points as follows:

SERVE
Ace = 3 points
Double Fault = -3 points

POWER
Winner = 2 points
Unforced Error = -1 point

RETURNS = 1 point for every percentage of receiving points won

NET PLAY
Net point won = 2 points
Net point lost = -1 point

MIND = 7 points for converted break point

You have to include at least 1 man or woman in your team of 5, you get 5 changes to make in between each round and select a captain.

I've made a league, anyone can join if they want. The league name and password is "FanFooty".

You can fine the comp here http://fantasy.wimbledon.com (http://fantasy.wimbledon.com)

Let's also use this thread for Wimbledon discussion over the next 2 weeks. I like Djokovic this year, but I think it will be quite an open competition. A number of people could get the title.

Budget of 1000, all semi decent are like 1/4 of the budget.

Not so easy.  :'(

Edit: I feel like I need to pay more attention to the games of some players to actually know what they're decent at.  :-[

Good to see a few people joining up!

Definitely very tough with the budget available. Here is the team I ended up going with.

SERVE - Sam Groth - 50 points

RETURN - Lleyton Hewitt - 300 points

MIND - Casey Dellacqua - 50 points

POWER - Eugenie Bouchard - 200 points (WILD CARD)

NET - Mikhail Youzhny - 400 points

Will be interesting to see how this team goes. Dellacqua probably isn't the best pick, but what can you expect when you only have 50 points to spend?

Definitely jump on Groth for the serve though. Only 50 points and he has one of the best serves on tour.

Without logging in again, from memory I have: Melzer, Bouchard, Gulbis, Pospisil and Verdasco. Not necessarily in that order. Think Gulbis is my wildcard.

Serve Groth
Return Kyrgios Kuznetsov
Mind Novak
Power Berdych
Net Li Na Duval
Wildcard Novak 'The Joker' Djokovic

Be careful - I think I have used 3 5 transfers already.  :-[

Changed my mind on a couple of players and the 5 soon became a 2 0 in the top right corner box.

Now says 'remaining transfers : 2 0'.

Did have 5.

I thought you could have 5 during a round and that the comp didn't begin until the tournament started.

It's still open to changes, it's pretty weird.

My current team:

Serve: Nick Kyrgios
Power: Bouchard
Return: Novak (WC)
Net Play: Sloane Stephens
Mind: Dimitrov

Pretty happy with that.

Well I think I've been locked out with the following team. Stupid site doesn't tell me anywhere that it's passed the lockout time, but anyway.

Serve: Nick Kyrgios
Power: Dominika Cibulkova
Return: Dustin Brown
Net Play: Gael Monfils
Mind: Donna Vekic

And 200 points left over. ::)

Is that a good score?

Re Stosur - glad I didn't select her as my 'mind'.

So Pospisil and Verdasco lost, Gulbis won and Melzer plays Tsonga who will probs beat him.

Can anyone help me interpret the Wildcard rules?

I currently have Djokovic as WC. He is my 'Mind' player. Scored me 42 points plus a bonus of 42.

If I change him to my 'Return' player, does he take the double score over to 'Return' or is it lost?
Title: Re: Wimbledon Fantasy & Discussion Thread
Post by: Ringo on June 24, 2014, 12:48:07 PM
From the Rules Doc

You need to choose one of your initial five attributes to act as a 'wild card'. The wild card will score you double points in that chosen category for as long as the player remains in 2014 Championships. Once you have chosen your 'wild card', you cannot change it for the duration of The Championships. There is, however, no restriction on changing the attribute itself. Should you make a change from your initial selection, you won't then receive double points for that attribute for the rest of the tournament.

So my intepretation is that it would be lost as the wildcard was on the mind attribute. Very hard trying to work out this fantasy game with trades etc.
Title: Re: Wimbledon Fantasy & Discussion Thread
Post by: PowerBug on June 24, 2014, 01:14:23 PM
Is this the first time they've done this? There's some flaws I think that need to be worked on.
Title: Re: Wimbledon Fantasy & Discussion Thread
Post by: tor01doc on June 24, 2014, 01:15:02 PM
My interpretation is that as long as the player you have selected as your Wildcard is still in, he/she will get double for whatever attribute is applied to him / her.

The double points for the original attribute makes way for double points for the new attribute??

Although, at this stage I am unwilling to risk it so will keep The Joker as my 'Mind' and just hope he breaks a lot of service games.
Title: Re: Wimbledon Fantasy & Discussion Thread
Post by: Ringo on June 24, 2014, 04:00:03 PM
Interesting Doc I would probably lean to the side that you recorded Joker as Mind so he stays as mind and gets double points for that attribute.
Like you not game to test it.  My Wildcard is Serena Williams as Power atm but just wondering like you if I want to change her to serve.

Slamming Aces hits the top of the leaderboard.

Now - change your WC's attribute.

I will if you will!

So I only lost Dustin Brown from Round 1. Monfils got through, Kyrgios also, Cibulkova was expected to win but Donna Vekic beat Roberta Vinci! Wasn't expecting that, I was just hoping that Vekic would get some breaks of serve. She got 4 so 28 points there!

So how about my score though? This is weird and probably wrong.
Kyrgios - 75
Brown - 32
Monfils - 68 (34x2)
Cibulkova - 39
Vekic - 28
= 242

Now my score says I have 293. I traded Brown to Djokovic (Return) yesterday and I've been given both players' scores!

Doesn't matter how many you 'lose' as long as your Wildcard stays in.

5 changes can be made between rounds.

I have The Joker as my Wildcard.

Found that out myself PB so some of the secret is use your 5 trades each round to increase your score. Changed Growth to Kyrgios yesterday for serve and got Kyrgious and Groth scores as well. Sitting on 354points atm - Did another trade this morning Lisicki to Venus Williams who plays tonight as well. Got i trade left so may use it as well since I discovered this little gem.

Yep Doc my thought exactly but now found out that is allowed have to take advantage.  ;) ;)

So basically you can trade 5 times within the trade period. So you can set up with a player playing on day 1 of period and bring another player in on day 2.  Probably only can do in the early rounds though but will monitor.

As you say Doc stupid idea but maybe that is why we only have a 1000 point cap. May have snookered myself with the trades today as

Part of the problem is a last minute entry in a comp that has fundamental differences to that we are used to.

The rules seem sketchy and need to be more clear.

I will keep trying because I have to beat Ringo.

You get 5 trades per round, and you're allowed to trade to players who have already played in that round (incase some have smashed their opponent in a category). You can still get their points counted if you trade them in during the same round.

Just not sure if you can trade out who you gave your wildcard to as you get double points for them as long as they remain in. Doc and Ringo haven't tried trading them out yet I believe in case it gets taken away :-X.

That's a stupid way for trading to work. Rules are so vague for this comp.

Anyway, Matosevic played a good match last night, it was really good to see so much serve vollying, it makes for exciting tennis.

How about Stahkovsky though. Knocks out Federer last year and took down Gulbis in straight sets last night. He is a real danger man on the grass.

Serve: Broady 12 + Kyrgios 48 (Traded after Day 3)
Power: Cibulkova 28
Return: Djokovic 35
Net: Monfils 94 (47x2)
Mind: Konjuh 35 + Kyrgios 28 (Traded after Day 3)

I actually got 315 points somehow. I traded Djokovic to Kuznetsov after Day 3 too, Kuznetsov had already played and scored 46 points. However that doesn't make up the 35 points extra, unless by trading to Kuznetsov I actually got Djokovic's points again idk.

I have a couple of players who played last night but don't have their scores yet.

Do I trade them out now? Will their scores count if I do?

This is the most confusing fantasy game I have ever tried.

So I have Isner as my 'serve' but his match has been postponed.

Do I get his score if I trade him now after that day's deadline?

I actually find this comp really painful but I am doing OK so will tough it out.

You weren't the only one to have him as serve Doc. Started with him as serve as I knew that was his strongest suit and have not changed.  Rest is flower though with the demise of Serena Willimas.

Pity the rain delays forces him to play his next match tomorrow morning, Raonic despite being seeded is also playing his first Wimbledon so keep the pressure on Nick.

Can't describe how disillusioned I am with this format.

Luckily I got an apologetic email from the organisers explaining why they took a lot of points from me.

Apparently they had me as having Nadal as my wildcard as well as Djokovic.

I have never had Nadal.

I told them that we all hate their competition and that we have voted to never enter again.

I hope they award me an extra 500 points as a sweetener.

Suck me Wimbledon Fantasy!

Title: Re: Wimbledon Fantasy & Discussion Thread
Post by: tor01doc on July 05, 2014, 10:58:15 PM
Do not start with the 'poor' in front of any woman tennis player.

I just heard Pommie fuzz bumping Sam whatsername say Kvitova's serve has been BRILLIANT.

So brilliant. Not good or OK or solid or even average but flowering BRILLIANT.

Lucky me. I have her as my 'serve'.

So far - FOUR aces and THREE double faults. And that is BRILLIANT?!

On Wednesday I got 39 aces and 2 doubles from Raonic. That is brilliant. Not this showerty overpaid girlie stuff.

After 2 sets, the men play for free. That's right folks. For nothing.

Cutie pants Bouchard hadn't lost a set until tonight. Gets the same prizemoney as the guys. And she has served ONE flowering ace tonight - vs 2 double faults.

Oh, thank goodness the bottle of red I destroyed has a bigger punt than she does.

End of Wimbledon Fantasy. End of me watching women's tennis ever again. End of rant.

Women's tennis is better for 1 reason and 1 reason alone. It's not the same 4 women winning every single flowering Grand Slam.

Might as well just start men's tennis from the semi-finals. The rest play for 5-128.

So with just one match to play the podium seems sorted.

1506 - ET Phone Home
1464 - Ace10 (not 100% sure who this is - Torpedo or GoLions?)
1327 - Ringo

1095 Powerbug and the rest are history.

I have Djokovic as my 'mind' and WC and Roger as my 'power'.

And Paula Kania as my 'serve'.  :-* - see pic above.

Good luck.
