Maybe Goodes should prove why he deserved Australian of the year.  Yeah I said it! #floweringflog

I won't go as far you but there has been talk Goodes would be courted by political parties well this would be a perfect problem for him to tackle firstly in the AFL then with all indigenous people , he always came across as someone who wanted to help his people out well time to step up , pollies have been throwing billions of dollars at trying fix the problems for as long as I can remember and nothing ever changes and the only way to fix the alcohol related family violence and incarceration problems is within indigenous communities not from Canberra.

Reasons for Goodes to be AOTY
- Chamion Footballer (this doesn't really count)
- Actively involved in Indigenous community programs
- Spends time helping troubled youth
- A good role model to people that generally wouldn't have a good role model
- Advocates for education, health and employment
- Fights against racism

Reasons for Goodes not to be AOTY
- There could be someone more worthy (idk who)
- ???

You seriously think there isn't better out there?  What about all the research scientists and Dr's looking for cures for cancer and other diseases.  What about those volunteers who travel the world doing so much for impoverished countries building schools, setting up health camps off their own backs, those people work for a few months at at time so they can afford to make the world a better place.  And guess what, these people help ALL others, not distinguishing between race, culture or disability.

Haha. Firstly, you can't talk about disease researchers and then in the same breath talk about not distinguishing by disability.

And those volunteers are great. But just because they're helping out impoverished people in other countries doesn't take away from the work Goodes did here with an at risk and disadvantaged population.

Don't get me wrong, I see the value of our researchers, I start my first proper job out of uni next year as a science researcher. You've got to look at impact as well though- firstly, keep in mind that the work Goodes does is not his job, it's something he does to help people (like those volunteers), and providing that role model and support to indigenous people can be life saving as well. If we didn't have any researchers make massive break throughs that year, then Goodes' impact probably was more noteable. Or maybe it was that his impact was measured as more important because he was one of the most prominent indigenous Australians doing his work and subsequently publicised their issues more? The actual awarding of AOTY to Goodes would have helped promote his cause even more.

I love how people slag out on Goodes but nobody mentions Buttrose's (Founder of Cleo) AOTY award in 2013 or Rush's (Actor) in 2012.

Why don't you go through the shortlisted nominees and tell us who you would have picked and why, so we can get a better understanding?

Shane Crawford. It was the year he rode from Melbourne to Perth to raise awareness for breast cancer and raised a crap load of money in the process. Some people won't even consider doing that drive let alone riding a bicycle.

Yeah really need a translator  :P

Clearly a very troubled guy and I hope he's got a decent mental worker with him. If those allegations are true Freo have a lot to answer for.

Won't argue that Crawford doesn't deserve it, but I don't see him as any more or less worthy than Goodes. The Indigenous community is very much troubled for obvious historical reasons and Shane Yarran shows this. The work Goodes does in the Indigenous community is invaluable.

How isn't Goodes helping everyone in what he does? Surely if more Indigenous men are staying out of jail, getting an education and getting a job that's a positive for the whole community.

Given the sheer number of Australians who disagree with the decision theres no doubt there is more deserving people for the award, technically meets the 3 criteria they use for the award, although id agure hes a role model for fewer people than the other thousands of people who could have won the award.
