SEASON IN REVIEW

Season W/L: 8 wins / 6 losses / 1 draw

Finishing Position: 8th

Rob Roy Award: 10th

Best Moment: He did it multiple times throughout the year, but Lachie Neale put the boys on his back in Round 4 to surge over the Magic for a 14 point win. In doing so, his effort stabilised what was looking like a very shaky start to the season.

Worst Moment: Both Callum Sinclair and his OOP replacement Kyron Hayden went down injured in Round 15, leaving the Hedgies stuck with a 21 on field, and a subsequent 39 point loss to the Hoods.

Coaches Comment: Job done again for the boys this season. Was looking very shaky for a while there but finals were ultimately achieved. The goal last off-season was to lower our age profile while remaining in the top half of the ladder and we managed that. Lots of inconsistent scores across the board but we showed on numerous occasions we can match it with the best when switched on. One more off-season of tinkering should see the rebuild fully complete and us challenging for the Top 4 in 2020.

T Dog Medal (B&F): Lachie Neale

Bit of deja vu this year for Lachie. Got us out of trouble time and time again and rightfully goes back to back in the T Dog medal! Was also joint 2nd in the BXV MVP.

2nd: Dion Prestia

A last minute trade decision was the only reason that Dion Prestia ended up wearing green blue & white in 2019, and he made the competition remember his quality with close to a career-best season. Was the clear standout in the side behind the great man.

Joint 3rd: Darcy Byrne-Jones & Luke Dunstan

Luke Dunstan FINALLY delivered on some of his potential in 2019, averaging a very solid 160 playing in the guts. It was very nice to finally have a 3rd potent option in the middle of the park given other areas inconsistencies across 2019.

Eyebrows were raised last off-season when Darcy was poached from Birmingham for essentially Pick 19. The coach backed Darcy to break out this year and he emphatically delivered, averaging 147 and almost making it into the top 10 defenders for the year at only 23 years of age.

5th: Zak Jones

The bald magician had a fantastic year running off half-back, and earns a top 5 placing as a result.

Coaches Award:Darcy Byrne-Jones

Absolutely outstanding year for Darcy, essentially playing the role we expected Witherden to. Constant reliable source of points in the back line which can never be understated. Has shined with increased responsibility out of the back half for Port Adelaide, and a change in game-style with the addition of a new back coach.

Most Improved: Pat Lipinski

Gone from being a talented half-forward to playing inside midfield in 2019. Lipinski averaged a very respectable 128 for the year and his mammoth performances earlier in the season proved the catalyst for the Hedgies' late-season run of form.

Rookie of the Year: Callum Wilkie

Originally very narrowly passed on at Rookie 3 and eventually snapped up gleefully at Rookie 21, Callum Wilkie has had an extremely consistent start to his time in the top flight. A reliable contributor week in week out, Wilkie's 150 against Manchester in Round 4 was instrumental in holding onto the win. Has gotten better as the season has worn on and is tipped for bigger things in 2020.

TEAM OF THE YEAR

D: Darcy Byrne-Jones, Zak Jones, Alex Witherden, Callum Wilkie

M: Lachie Neale (c), Dion Prestia (vc), Luke Dunstan, Will Brodie

R: Callum Sinclair

F: Toby Greene, Brandon Parfitt, Patrick Lipinski, Zac Fisher
