Club Guernseys:

Home Ground:

Amini Park

Amini Park is the headquarters of the Papua New Guinea Cricket.

The ground is adjacent to the Colts Cricket Ground in the heart of Boroko and in 1956, the Moresby Australian Rules Football Club was formed and this ground was set up in the same year for Rules games.

In the early 1970's, the Moresby Rules FC merged with the Colts Cricket Club and moved across to the Colts Cricket ground.

The ground was named Amini Park in 1983 after Herea Amini, who was one of the first Papua New Guineans to play and administer the sport of Rules Football.

Amini Park was upgraded in 1991 for the SP Games in Port Moresby where PNG won the gold against Fiji.

Amini Park is the home of PNG Cricket and is one of two major cricket venues in Port Moresby.

No.1 Ticket Holder:

Malcolm Robert "Mal" Michael (born 24 June 1977) is a Papua New Guinean born former Australian rules footballer. He is notable for his successful professional career in the Australian Football League. In a career spanning 238 games and three clubs in two Australian states he is best known as a triple premiership full-back with the Brisbane Lions. Michael is recognised as being one of the best Queensland produced Australian rules footballers of all time, being named on the AFL Queensland Team of the 20th Century.

He is possibly the only Australian rules footballer who is better known in a country other than Australia, maintaining a high profile in Papua New Guinea, and he is credited by many to have inspired the boom in playing numbers of Australian rules football in Papua New Guinea. In April 2009, The Guardian described him as one of Papua New Guinea's "living national icons".

New Coach ready for the Challenge
12 March 2014

PNG Head Hunters' new coach Rusty is under no illusions of easing into the coaching position in 2014. After finishing 6th, including a finals win, in the debut season of the Asian XV competition, the new coach's leads a revamped squad dealing with some early season injuries.

Forward Robbie Tarrant this week added to the pre-season injuries to ruckman Zac Clarke and defender Colin Garland, whilst vice-captain Andrew Swallow was still some time away returning from the achilles injury he suffered last year. The club has also confirmed that defender Marley Williams will not play before his sentencing in April for a previous assault.

"The entire club will stand by Marley regardless of the outcome", said Rusty. "Whilst we do not condone violence, Marley is committed to turning his life around and we will give him all the support he needs".

The Head Hunters begin the season in 2 days time against UAE Tigers.

2014 Season Review

8 August 2014

The PNG Head Hunters rounded out the 2014 season last weekend with a disappointing loss to wooden spooners the Vietnam Vipers. The loss sees the Head Hunters finish a disappointed 12th position after making the finals in the inaugural season of the AXV's last year.

After starting the season 2-1 with two early home wins, a narrow loss in Sri Lanka to the eventual Minor Premiers the Strikers sparked a horror run of 8 consecutive losses that saw PNG slump to 15th position with a 2-9 record.

The winless streak was broken with a home win in Round 12 against the Gazelles, which was followed by 4 more consecutive wins that gave the Head Hunter's supporters a glimmer of hope that maybe a repeat finals appearance could be achieved.

This glimmer was snuffed out in Bangladesh against the 3rd place Bears. A brave defeat against the 2nd place Crocodiles followed before last weekend's disappointing loss to Vietnam, giving the Vipers only their second win of the season.

2014 Awards

22 August 2014

Tom Rockliff has claimed back-to-back Mal Michael medals after a barnstorming second half of the season. After Round 10, Rockliff was one vote behind eventual runner-up Dyson Heppell before a second half surge that saw him take out the best and fairest award by 13 votes.

In 3rd place behind Rockliff and Heppell was another midfielder Sam Gibson who had an extremely consistent year whilst forward Jamie Elliott was 4th followed by veteran utility Shaun Burgoyne.

In a promising sign for the future, first round draft pick Jack Billings finished in a tie for 9th, and was an obvious choice for rookie of the year. After making his debut in Round 5, Billings went on to play 13 games and showed he has what it takes to become a star of the competition.

2015 Season Review
10 August 2015

The PNG Head Hunters have finished the 2015 season in 12th position, matching their final position of 2014, after a third straight loss to the end the year. A final round home loss against the 2nd placed Australian Ales was proceeded by losses to the Taiwan Dolphins and Kathmandu Eskimoes.

After starting the season 2-2 including a home win over defending premiers the Bangladesh Bears, the Head Hunters went on a losing streak similar to last season, losing the next 6 matches. In 2014 there was a similar run of losses for the PNG team, losing 8 in a row from Rounds 4-11.

A run of 4 wins in 6 games, including a win over 2014 runner's up the Sri Lanka Strikers gave supporters hope of a strong finish to the year. However the season finished with losses to Top 4 sides the Eskimoes and Ales, whilst a Round 18 home loss to the (then 15th placed) Dolphins was the lowlight of the season.

The Head Hunters will look to continue their push of youth through the trade period and draft and hope of a stronger showing next season.

2015 Awards

14 August 2015

Dyson Heppell has claimed the 2015 Mal Michael medal in an expected result on Friday night. Despite a patchy finish to the year Heppell (50 votes) finished well clear of forwards Tom Bell (37) and Jamie Elliott (31) and was clearly the teams best player throughout the year. Tom Bell was the Head Hunter's most improved player this year to finish runner-up to Heppell after not polling a single vote in last season's count. Elliott backed up last season's 4th place finish, whilst also leading the clubs goalkicking for a second straight year.

Skipper, and two-time reigning Mal Michael medallist, Tom Rockliff finished 4th after his season was hampered by rib and concussions injuries this season. Rockliff showed his importance to the team, by polling 18 of his 26 votes in the final 5 games of the year, including 3 maximum 5 votes performances.

Promoted rookie Cameron Ellis-Yolmen won the club's rookie of the year award, finishing with 14 votes and tied for 8th in the overall count. Ellis-Yolmen polled all of his votes up to round 12 before tailing off and playing the final 4 games of the year in the Reserves.

Yeah he has, that's why I was happy to trade him into my British team as well.

Hoping he retains forward status ;)

2016 Awards
10 August 2016

Lachie Hunter's outstanding season has been capped off by winning the 2016 Mal Michael medal. Hunter carried on his late season form from last year throughout this season and won the count with 56 votes. In second place was Headhunters skipper Tom Rockliff (43 votes) who had his customary late season charge including 33 from a possible 35 votes between Rounds 11 and 18. In a tie for 3rd place on 23 votes were defender Shane Biggs and forward Mav Weller who like Hunter, both had breakout seasons this year. Defender Paul Seedsman rounded out the Top 5, a vote further back on 22.

Promoted rookie Rory Atkins won the club's rookie of the year award, finishing with 12 votes in the count and tied for 8th. After playing his first game for the year in Round 6, Atkins played every remaining game and provided a consistent link-up from defence to attack.

2017 Awards
Skipper Tom Rockliff has held on to win his 3rd Mal Michael medal as the PNG Head Hunters Best and Fairest from 2017. Still hampered from his mid-season shoulder injury, Rockliff only polled 9 votes in the second half of the season and 0 in the final 4 games. However his blistering start was enough to hold by 1 vote from second year young gun Clayton Oliver. Oliver was very consistent in his break-out year and despite polling in the last 5 games of the season, including a BOG in the final game of the year, he would fall short of pipping his skipper for the award. Returning star midfielder Dyson Heppell finished 3rd in the count on 33 votes, 1 ahead of last season's medallist Lachie Hunter. Another youngster to breakout, Jack Billings rounded out the Top 5, 1 vote ahead of defender Luke McDonald and wingman Rory Atkins.

One award Oliver didn't miss out on, was the Head Hunters rookie of the year award. After an outstanding second season he was an obvious winner for the award.
